Eighty-six point nine nautical miles between Costa Rica's two international airports. It is the route we recommend least in the entire Costa Rican catalogue, and this page explains why, and when it is the exception. Quoted per aircraft on request.

Why usually not
Between these two points there is a main highway, and there are scheduled flights. They are the two alternatives that almost never appear together elsewhere in the catalogue.
A private flight here does not buy access: it buys timing. And eighty-seven nautical miles of timing, in a country where the same money takes you to Drake Bay or Tortuguero, is rarely the best use of the budget.
We say so here, on the route's own page, because we would rather you trusted the fifteen where we do recommend flying.
The specific aircraft is assigned on confirmation, based on passenger count, baggage and the destination field.
The three situations where it does
An international connection on a thin margin. If you land in the Central Valley and your outbound is from Liberia a few hours later, the road is a risk against an expensive ticket and the scheduled service may not fit.
A large group with baggage. Eight people with surfboards or fishing kit, splitting the cost, make a different calculation from a couple with suitcases.
As the first leg of an itinerary. And this is the interesting one: if your real destination is Tamarindo or Nosara, this flight is probably unnecessary.
The mistake this page prevents
Here is the advice that actually matters, and it may save you the flight entirely.
Many people look for San José–Liberia because their final destination is in Guanacaste. But there are direct routes from San José to the Guanacaste destinations: Nosara is 85.6 nautical miles away and Tamarindo 97.1 — barely ten more than Liberia.
Flying to Liberia and then continuing to Tamarindo is two flights and a stop, to reach somewhere that is the same distance in a straight line.
If your destination is not the city of Liberia, ask for the direct. See private flights from San José.
And the decision taken earlier
If you have not yet booked your long-haul flight and your trip is to Guanacaste, the answer is not this flight: it is to enter through Liberia.
From there Nosara is 37.6 nautical miles and Tamarindo 23.2, less than half the distance from the Central Valley. No later optimisation makes up for a poor choice of entry airport.
