The country's busiest domestic airport
In 2014, Puerto Jiménez was Costa Rica's third busiest airport and its busiest domestic-only one.
It is a figure that reorders how people picture Osa. The peninsula feels remote, and by road it is; by air it is one of the country's most frequented domestic connections.
Which has a practical consequence: there is scheduled service, and for a simple transfer between two people it is worth checking before asking for a charter.
The specific aircraft is assigned on confirmation, based on passenger count, baggage and the destination field.
By road it is six to eight hours
And it is not a bad road for most of the way: the Costanera Sur works as far as Chacarita, and the turn-off onto the peninsula is where the journey stretches.
The flight buys the transfer day, exactly as at Pedasí or Flores. What it does not buy is access: Puerto Jiménez can be driven to.
That is different from Drake Bay, 23.0 nautical miles from here, where the road genuinely ends.
Puerto Jiménez or Drake Bay
It is the decision people most often confuse, and they are two different products.
Puerto Jiménez is a town with services, the access to Corcovado's La Leona sector and to Golfo Dulce excursions. No notable runway restrictions.
Drake Bay sits at the other end of the peninsula, 23.0 nautical miles away, and its strip measures 1,000 × 18 m — generous, contrary to what is usually assumed.
If you travel in a large group or with bulky baggage, Puerto Jiménez will not limit your aircraft and Drake Bay will. The specific aircraft is assigned on confirmation, based on passenger count, baggage and the destination field.
Corcovado is not improvised
The park requires a certified guide and entry quotas are arranged in advance. It is not our formality and we do not handle it, but it belongs here because it is the reason for the trip. Access requires an authorisation handled by the area’s administration or your local operator, on their own timescales.
From the airport to the gulf lodges or the park stations there is also a transfer we do not operate. Ground transfer is not included in the fare: your accommodation or a local operator arranges it.
And if you are coming from Guanacaste
Liberia is 181.4 nautical miles away, nearly twice San José. Osa is the opposite end of the country.
If your trip combines Guanacaste and Osa, check the order: they are the two most widely separated points in the Costa Rican catalogue, and chaining them badly costs a full day.
