Seventy-two point one nautical miles from Honduras's international gateway to the island we almost always tell you to reach by ferry. This page explains the three cases where that changes. Quoted per aircraft on request.

First: there is a ferry, and it is good
Útila lies thirty-six kilometres off the coast of La Ceiba, and the ferry from there is cheap, frequent and well known.
It is the destination in the archipelago where we most often recommend the boat, and we are not going to change our minds on the route's own page. If you have time and you are reaching La Ceiba anyway, take the ferry.
And the three cases where you should not
Same-day international connection. This is the real argument for the route. San Pedro Sula is the country's international gateway, and from there the ferry requires first a ground transfer to La Ceiba and then fitting the boat's timetable. Seventy-two nautical miles remove both.
Rough seas. Thirty-six kilometres of open water are not always comfortable, and the ferry depends on conditions that give no notice.
Dive baggage. That is practically all the traffic to Utila, and loading heavy kit onto a boat is more awkward than into an aeroplane.
The specific aircraft is assigned on confirmation, based on passenger count, baggage and the destination field.
The detour, again
Direct is 72.1 nautical miles. Via La Ceiba, 86.6.
Fourteen and a half more, and in this case the detour is not by air but mixed: a flight or drive to La Ceiba, a wait, and the ferry. It is the kind of chain where every link has its own timetable.
Seventh appearance of the same arithmetic in the corpus, and the first in which the avoided leg is by sea rather than by air.
Approach over the water
An operational detail at Útila: the northeast approach and departure are over the water, and the field sits at twenty-nine feet elevation.
It is not an access limitation, but it explains why operations here depend more on visibility than at mainland fields. The aircraft is decided by your group and your baggage. The specific aircraft is assigned on confirmation, based on passenger count, baggage and the destination field.
The interval between diving and flying
Utila is a diving destination almost exclusively, and there a physiological constraint governs: there is a recommended interval between a last dive and flying.
With an international connection waiting in San Pedro Sula, take that margin generously. The departure day is not a diving day. The interval between your last dive and the flight is the one your dive centre specifies.
It is in fact an argument for the ferry on the way back: if your international flight leaves in the afternoon, the boat imposes no such interval.
Frequently asked questions
How long is San Pedro Sula to Utila?
The flight covers 72.1 nautical miles. The mixed route means going to La Ceiba and taking the ferry, with the corresponding wait.
Is the ferry not better?
Almost always yes. It is cheap, frequent, and the island is thirty-six kilometres from La Ceiba. We recommend the boat except in three cases.
What are those cases?
A same-day international connection, rough seas, or bulky dive baggage.
How much does the detour cost?
Direct is 72.1 nautical miles and via La Ceiba 86.6. But what is removed is not distance: it is a ground transfer and a boat timetable.
What is the Utila field like?
It sits at twenty-nine feet elevation, and the northeast approach and departure are over the water. Operations depend more on visibility than at mainland fields.
Can I dive on the return day?
No. There is a recommended interval between a last dive and flying. If your international leaves in the afternoon, the ferry imposes no such interval. The interval between your last dive and the flight is the one your dive centre specifies.
