La Ceiba is the mainland gateway to the Bay Islands, and all three islands lie under seventy nautical miles away. This page explains which one earns a flight and which does not. On request per aircraft.
The destinations, by distance
| Destination | Distance | Worth a private flight? |
|---|---|---|
| Utila | 22.3 NM | Usually not: there is a ferry from here |
| Roatán | 39.4 NM | Usually not: direct scheduled flights |
| San Pedro Sula | 64.3 NM | Mainland connection |
| Guanaja | 69.0 NM | Yes: it is the exception |
It is probably the most honest hub in the catalogue, because at two of its four destinations we will tell you a flight is unnecessary.
The three islands are not interchangeable
They are always grouped together and they behave completely differently.
Roatán has direct scheduled flights and an international airport. Flying privately from La Ceiba buys timing, not access.
Utila is 22.3 nautical miles away — closer to the mainland than to Roatán — and has a ferry from here: cheap, frequent, perfectly reasonable. It is the destination where we most often recommend the boat.
Guanaja is the exception. Without Roatán's scheduled service and without a sea service like Utila's, it is the worst connected of the three. Here the charter does not compete: it makes the trip possible.
The specific aircraft is assigned on confirmation, based on passenger count, baggage and the destination field.
Where La Ceiba genuinely wins
On the whole itinerary, not on a single route.
Chaining Roatán, Utila and Guanaja by scheduled air and sea is a timetable puzzle, because each island has its own frequencies and none of them line up. By air they are hops of 22.3, 24.0 and 36.3 nautical miles, and you set the hour.
That is the strong argument for this origin, and the only one we make without qualification.
So do not compare leg against leg, but the whole week against the whole week. Taken separately, each of these hops loses to the ferry or the scheduled flight; taken together, the routing wins because it removes the waits between islands.
A weather warning that affects the whole archipelago
Roatán publishes no METAR of its own. The nearest station is Golosón, here in La Ceiba, 73 kilometres away.
That means the weather information available for the most visited island in the archipelago describes the mainland. In an archipelago with microclimates that distance matters, and it is worth knowing before scheduling on a thin margin. Several fields in the network operate in daylight and visual conditions, and close when the weather does not allow it.
The interval between diving and flying
Almost all traffic from this origin is diving, and there a physiological constraint governs that is not ours: there is a recommended interval between a last dive and flying, and it applies the same privately and on scheduled services.
Practical consequence: the day you transfer is not a full diving day. Plan backwards from the flight. The interval between your last dive and the flight is the one your dive centre specifies.

Frequently asked questions
How far are the Bay Islands?
Utila at 22.3 nautical miles, Roatán at 39.4 and Guanaja at 69.0. All three under seventy.
Which island is worth flying to privately?
Guanaja, the worst connected of the three. Roatán has direct scheduled flights and Utila has a ferry from La Ceiba.
Why do you recommend the ferry to Utila?
It is 22.3 nautical miles, closer to the mainland than to Roatán, and the ferry is cheap and frequent. It is where we most often recommend the boat.
When does the charter earn its place here?
On the whole itinerary. Chaining the three islands by scheduled air and sea is a timetable puzzle; by air they are hops of 22, 24 and 36 nautical miles.
Is there weather information for Roatán?
It publishes no METAR of its own. The nearest station is Golosón, in La Ceiba, 73 kilometres away on the mainland. Several fields in the network operate in daylight and visual conditions, and close when the weather does not allow it.
Can I dive and fly the same day?
There is a recommended interval between a last dive and flying. The transfer day is not a full diving day. The interval between your last dive and the flight is the one your dive centre specifies.
