Seventeen point two nautical miles. Thirty-two kilometres. It is a minimal hop, and yet it is the leg no long-haul airline can fly for you. Quoted per aircraft on request.
Why this leg exists as a product
St Barths does not receive long-haul flights. It is not a question of demand or commercial routings: it is that the Gustaf III runway is 646 metres long, 18 wide, and approaches to runway 10 require a steep descent over the Morne du Vitet hill, rising some 46 metres.
Pilots also need a specific endorsement from the French DGAC, which involves ground instruction and several supervised landings. It is not an administrative formality: it is a qualification earned by flying.
Princess Juliana, by contrast, is the major gateway for the smaller Leeward Islands. The world arrives there; this leg departs from there.
That is why anyone travelling to St Barths from any distant point ends up on this route, whether they searched for it or not.
Ground services at these fields are limited and vary by aerodrome and by hour.
The fact that sets your departure time
Gustaf III operates daily between 7am and 15 minutes after sunset. Actual closing falls between roughly 6pm and 7pm depending on the time of year.
On a seventeen-nautical-mile leg that sounds irrelevant, and it is not. What matters is not how long the flight takes but what time you land at St Maarten. If your inbound flight into SXM runs late into the afternoon, the window closes and the connection moves to the next day.
It is the only route in the catalogue where a third party's punctuality — your arriving flight — determines whether ours operates today or tomorrow.
The sea alternative
There is a boat service between the two islands. It is markedly cheaper and works well given good weather, time to spare and light luggage.
The real reasons to fly are three: sea state, because the crossing is not always comfortable; baggage, if you are carrying volume; and timing, if your connection margin is thin. If none of the three applies, the boat is a legitimate option and we say so here.
The aircraft
At this distance range plays no part whatsoever. What decides is the runway: 646 metres admits only small STOL aircraft, and only with endorsed crew.
Which aircraft and which operator cover this leg, and whether we sell it directly: The final leg is covered by a local operator with aircraft approved for the field; we confirm operator and aircraft in the quote. · The specific aircraft is assigned on confirmation, based on passenger count, baggage and the destination field.
Formalities
You cross from Dutch into French territory. Documentation, deadlines and service hours: Departure and entry formalities vary by country and need lead time; we coordinate them with every passenger’s details.
