Sixty-nine point eight nautical miles from the intercontinental airport to Guna Yala. It is the link that avoids entering the city, and it also brings a correction to something this catalogue overstated. Quoted per aircraft on request.

Tocumen is nearer, and here by a good margin
| Capital airport | To Playón Chico |
|---|---|
| Tocumen (PTY) | 69.8 NM |
| Albrook (PAC) | 81.1 NM |
Eleven point three nautical miles of difference, fourteen per cent of the run. It is not a tie: it is a real advantage.
The reason is geometric. Tocumen sits east of the city and so does Guna Yala. Albrook, downtown, is the wrong way round.
A correction we owe
On the Isla Contadora cost page we wrote that it was the only destination where Tocumen is nearer than Albrook. Producing this route showed that it is not.
San Blas is the second case, for the same reason: both destinations lie east.
We have corrected it in all four language versions of that page. We set it down here because a catalogue that states figures must correct them where they are seen.
The error was not in the arithmetic — 33.7 and 37.2 remain correct. It was in the scope of the claim: "the only" holds only for as long as the catalogue does not grow.
The aircraft may need to reposition to the departure aerodrome, and that leg forms part of the quote.
Who this route is for
For anyone arriving on an intercontinental flight and continuing the same day.
Here there is no trade-off between aerial convenience and ground logistics: Tocumen is both the nearer and the one that avoids the twenty-kilometre transfer to Albrook. The aircraft may need to reposition to the departure aerodrome, and that leg forms part of the quote.
For anyone already in the city, Albrook remains more practical despite the eleven nautical miles: it is downtown, and the run out to Tocumen consumes the advantage.
Guna Yala is visited with permission
It is the warning the destination calls for: the Guna Yala territory is an autonomous comarca with its own access rules, and visits are coordinated with the communities. Access requires an authorisation handled by the area’s administration or your local operator, on their own timescales.
We do not handle that permission and we do not replace your local operator. Plan that part first: the dates on the Guna side govern everything else.
And if you continue to the Pearl Islands
Playón Chico is 63.1 nautical miles from Isla Contadora. It is the direct link between Panama's Caribbean and Pacific without returning to the capital.
The two archipelagos are the two destinations where Tocumen wins. A Panamanian island itinerary can start and finish at the intercontinental without setting foot in the city.
Frequently asked questions
Which capital airport suits?
Tocumen: 69.8 nautical miles against Albrook's 81.1. Fourteen per cent less. The aircraft may need to reposition to the departure aerodrome, and that leg forms part of the quote.
Was Contadora not the only case?
That is what we published, and it was wrong. San Blas is the second, for the same reason: both lie east. Corrected in all four versions.
When does Albrook suit then?
If you are already in the city. It is downtown, and the run out to Tocumen consumes the eleven-mile advantage.
Do I need permission for Guna Yala?
It is an autonomous comarca with its own access rules; visits are coordinated with the communities. Access requires an authorisation handled by the area’s administration or your local operator, on their own timescales.
Can I continue to the Pearl Islands?
Playón Chico is 63.1 nautical miles from Isla Contadora: the direct link between both archipelagos without returning to the capital.
Is the flight from Tocumen to San Blas international?
No. Both points are in Panama, though on different coasts.
