Ten-day Belize itinerary

A week covers the cayes and the jungle. Ten days let you add a third piece: Placencia and the south, Tikal across the border, or Roatán's reef in Honduras.

A week in Belize covers the two essentials: the reef on the cayes and the jungle inland. Ten days let you add a third piece, and the choice is the interesting part: the beaches and culture of the south, Tikal across the border in Guatemala, or a second reef in Honduras. Each makes a different trip, and flying is what keeps the extra transfer from eating the extra days.

Route one: the whole country

Days one to three: the cayes. Fly straight from the international airport to Ambergris Caye, 29.6 nautical miles away, for the reef and a slower day or two.

Days four to six: the Cayo District. Jungle, rivers, caves and Xunantunich around San Ignacio.

Days seven to nine: Placencia and the south. Beaches, the jaguar reserve inland, and Hopkins for Garifuna culture. Punta Gorda is 36.6 nautical miles further south for anyone who wants the least-visited corner.

Day ten: fly back to the international airport for the flight home.

This is the deepest version of Belize, and the only one that reaches the south. Between Ambergris and Placencia, 85.7 nautical miles apart, a flight saves a long day of road and boat. We show a "from" price per route; the final fare depends on the date, the group and the baggage, and is confirmed in writing before booking.

Route two: Belize and Tikal

Days one to three on the cayes, and days four to seven in the Cayo District.

Days eight to ten: Tikal and Flores, across the border in Guatemala. Flores is 96.9 nautical miles from Belize's international airport and 124.1 from Ambergris Caye.

It pairs the reef with the greatest Maya city of the region, and a flight replaces a long overland day with border formalities. Belize is outside the CA-4, so the crossing means Guatemalan entry each way.

Route three: Belize and Roatán

Six days in Belize, split between the cayes and the jungle or Placencia, then four days on Roatán, in Honduras, 106.8 nautical miles from Placencia.

Two reefs and two cultures: Belize's barrier reef and Roatán's walls and dive scene, with a jungle leg in between. It suits divers most of all. The specific aircraft is assigned on confirmation, based on passenger count, baggage and the destination field.

What still doesn't fit

The south and Tikal together. Ten days hold one or the other comfortably; both makes a timetable.

Too many bases. Four is the most for a trip that still feels like a holiday.

Where a sector earns its place

Between the islands and the south, which road and boat connect only slowly.

To Tikal and Roatán, where the flight is what makes the leg possible in the time.

Not to the Cayo District, a two-hour drive from the international airport.

Arrival and departure

Fly straight to the islands on day one, avoiding a transfer across Belize City.

End near the international airport, or allow a full margin if the last base is Placencia or Tikal.

Safety and practicalities

Avoid driving between towns after dark, as current advisories recommend, and use organised transport for long transfers. We check travel advisories before confirming each route and tell you if they change.

When to go

We fly year-round. In the rainy season the pilot in command decides; if weather stops a flight, it is rescheduled at no cost. From February to May every route runs as written, with calm seas and dry roads.

In the wet season, route two is the most predictable, and the south receives the most rain.
