Seven-day Belize itinerary

A week that splits between the cayes and the Cayo jungle, with the transfers planned so the reef and the ruins both fit.

A week in Belize has a natural shape: half on the cayes for the reef, half inland for the jungle and the Maya sites. Those are the two things nearly every visitor comes for, and they sit on opposite sides of the country. The itinerary works when the move between them is planned rather than improvised.

The route that works

Day one: fly straight to the islands. From the international airport, Ambergris Caye is 29.6 nautical miles away. Connecting on the same day avoids crossing Belize City and gives you the first evening by the sea.

Days two and three: the reef. A snorkel or dive day at the southern end of Ambergris, and a second day for a longer boat trip or simply for the island. Caye Caulker, 11.3 nautical miles south, is an easy half-day visit or a place to spend a night instead.

Day four: to the Cayo District. Back to the mainland by air or water taxi, then about two hours by road west to San Ignacio. This is the one travel day of the week.

Day five: a Maya site and the river. Xunantunich, the closest major site to San Ignacio, in the morning; river or cave activities in the afternoon.

Day six: the jungle. A lodge day, a hike, or a longer cave tour with a licensed guide.

Day seven: back to the international airport, about two hours by road, and the flight home.

The result is reef and jungle in one week, with a single real transfer day.

The beach variant

Swap the Cayo District for Placencia if the priority is beaches rather than ruins. Placencia is 60.3 nautical miles from the international airport, and a flight turns a long road trip into a short hop.

It trades the Maya sites for sand, and suits couples and families who want a quieter second half.

Where Tikal fits

Tikal is in Guatemala, close to the Cayo District, and many visitors want to add it.

By road from San Ignacio, it is a long day trip across the border, which means Guatemalan entry formalities, since Belize is outside the CA-4 area.

By air, Flores is 96.9 nautical miles from Belize's international airport and 124.1 from Ambergris Caye. A flight makes Tikal a comfortable day rather than an exhausting one, or the start of a separate Guatemalan leg. We show a "from" price per route; the final fare depends on the date, the group and the baggage, and is confirmed in writing before booking. The specific aircraft is assigned on confirmation, based on passenger count, baggage and the destination field.

In a single week, add Tikal only by giving up a day elsewhere. It is worth it for anyone who cares about the Maya world; it is too much for anyone who came mainly for the reef.

What doesn't fit

The far south and the outer atolls, including a dive at the Great Blue Hole, need more time. A Blue Hole trip is a full day from the islands and works best as an addition to the reef days, not a replacement.

And too many bases. Two is ideal in a week; three is the limit.

Arrival and departure

Plan day one around the international arrival, with the island flight booked to match. A late arrival may mean a night near the airport.

Keep a margin on day seven. The drive from San Ignacio and the check-in window both need time.

Safety and practicalities

Avoid driving between towns after dark, as current advisories recommend, and use organised transport for transfers. We check travel advisories before confirming each route and tell you if they change.

What the season changes

We fly year-round. In the rainy season the pilot in command decides; if weather stops a flight, it is rescheduled at no cost. From February to May the route runs as written, with calm seas for the reef days.

From June to November, keep flexibility in the island days, since weather can cancel boat trips.

Frequently asked questions

Is a week enough for Belize?

Yes, for the cayes and the Cayo jungle. Half the week on the islands, half inland, with one transfer day.

Where should the trip start?

On the islands. Fly straight from the international airport to Ambergris Caye, 29.6 nautical miles away, on the day you land.

Can I add Tikal?

Yes, by giving up a day elsewhere. By road from San Ignacio it is a long day; Flores is 96.9 nautical miles from the international airport by air.

What if I prefer beaches to ruins?

Swap the Cayo District for Placencia, 60.3 nautical miles from the international airport.

Can I see the Great Blue Hole in a week?

As a full-day trip from the islands, in addition to the reef days rather than instead of them.

How many bases should I use?

Two is ideal in a week; three is the limit.
