Top destinations in Belize

Not a top-ten list but an honest sort: which place suits which traveller, the one that costs more than it gives on a short trip, and the region almost everyone skips.

Every list of the best places in Belize contains the same handful. The ranking is not the useful part; knowing which one suits you is. In Belize, the answer depends on whether the trip is about the reef, the beach, the jungle or the Maya world, because each lives in a different part of the country.

If it's your first trip

Ambergris Caye, for the reef on the doorstep and the widest choice of places to stay and eat, 29.6 nautical miles from the international airport.

And the Cayo District, around San Ignacio, for jungle, rivers and Xunantunich.

That pair is the standard first trip, and it works because it covers the two things Belize does best.

If you want the slow version

Caye Caulker, the small island with sand streets and no cars, 19.6 nautical miles from the international airport.

Placencia, for real swimming beaches and a quiet village, 60.3 nautical miles away.

If you want one particular thing

Snorkelling: the marine reserve off Ambergris's southern tip. Diving: the offshore atolls. The famous photograph: the Great Blue Hole, from the air. The biggest Maya site in Belize: Caracol, a full day into the forest. The easiest Maya site: Xunantunich, half a day from San Ignacio. Beaches: Placencia. Jaguar country: the Cockscomb Basin, from Placencia. Wetland birds: Crooked Tree. Doing nothing at all: a small private caye.

The one that costs more than it gives on a short trip

Said plainly, because a list without this section isn't worth reading.

Tikal, on a trip of four days or less. It is one of the great sites of the Maya world, and it is in Guatemala. Flores is 96.9 nautical miles from Belize's international airport, which makes it possible, but it adds a border and a full day. On a short trip, it takes more than it gives back. On a week or more, it can be the highlight. We show a "from" price per route; the final fare depends on the date, the group and the baggage, and is confirmed in writing before booking. The specific aircraft is assigned on confirmation, based on passenger count, baggage and the destination field.

The region almost everyone skips

The south. Hopkins, a coastal village known for its Garifuna culture and music; the forests and Maya villages of the Toledo District; and Punta Gorda, 36.6 nautical miles beyond Placencia.

Almost no one-week visitor goes there. It is the wettest, greenest and least developed part of the country, and for a second trip, or for anyone with ten days, it is the obvious gap.

How to actually choose

Choose by what the trip is about, then pick two bases at most for a week.

Reef: Ambergris or Caye Caulker. Beach: Placencia. Jungle and ruins: the Cayo District. Culture and the unvisited: Hopkins and the south.

Where the flight fits

Inside Belize, to the islands and the south, where road times are long or there is no road at all.

Regionally, to Tikal, when it fits the length of the trip.

Not to the Cayo District, which is a two-hour drive from the international airport.

Safety and season

Avoid driving between towns after dark, as current advisories recommend. We check travel advisories before confirming each route and tell you if they change.

We fly year-round. In the rainy season the pilot in command decides; if weather stops a flight, it is rescheduled at no cost. February to May suits every destination on this list, with calm seas and dry roads.

The wet season is greener and quieter, with the south receiving the most rain.
