A honeymoon in Belize

Jungle lodges inland, secluded resorts on the cayes and quiet beaches in the south. Why Belize works as a whole honeymoon.

Belize is one of the few places in Central America that works as a complete honeymoon on its own. It combines two settings couples usually have to choose between: a jungle lodge with Maya ruins nearby, and an island resort on the reef. The two are a short flight apart, and doing both is the classic Belize honeymoon.

Where it works

The north of Ambergris Caye, beyond the bridge, where secluded resorts sit along the beach away from the town, reached by cart or boat.

Private-island and small-caye resorts, the most secluded option, reached by boat or by air transfer.

Placencia, for couples who want real swimming beaches and a quieter village.

The jungle lodges of the Cayo District, near San Ignacio, with rivers, forest and the Maya sites a short drive away.

The order that works

Jungle first, island second. Start with three or four nights inland, when you have the energy for ruins, caves and river trips, and finish with four or five nights by the sea, when you want to do nothing at all.

End near the international airport. The islands are a short hop from it; Ambergris is 29.6 nautical miles away. The jungle, by contrast, is a two-hour drive.

The flight that joins them

The transfer between jungle and island is the one real travel day, and it is where a honeymoon loses time if it isn't planned.

By road and scheduled flight, it means a drive to Belize City and a connection. By private flight, it can be a single hop from the nearest airstrip to your island, or straight to Placencia, 60.3 nautical miles from the international airport. We show a "from" price per route; the final fare depends on the date, the group and the baggage, and is confirmed in writing before booking. The specific aircraft is assigned on confirmation, based on passenger count, baggage and the destination field.

For secluded resorts, ask how guests arrive. Some are reached only by boat, and the transfer is part of the experience; plan it with the arrival time in mind.

What feels like a honeymoon here

Privacy. Many of Belize's best resorts are small, with a handful of villas rather than hundreds of rooms.

Variety without long drives. Reef, jungle, ruins and beach in one trip, with short transfers.

English everywhere, which makes the practical side effortless.

Adding Tikal

For couples who love archaeology, Tikal in Guatemala is close to the jungle part of the trip. Flores is 124.1 nautical miles from Ambergris Caye by air, and a day trip can be built in. It adds a border and a day, so keep it for longer honeymoons.

The mistakes

Splitting between three or four bases. Two is ideal, three the limit.

Island first, jungle second. It works, but most couples prefer to end relaxing rather than travelling.

A tight final day. Build the departure around the international flight; from a remote caye, allow for the boat as well.

Practical notes

Check your insurance and your own government's advisory before paying deposits, as for any trip. We check travel advisories before confirming each route and tell you if they change.

Book small resorts well ahead, since many have only a few villas.

Between Placencia and Ambergris, fly. They are 85.7 nautical miles apart, and the alternative is a long day of road and boat.

When to go

We fly year-round. In the rainy season the pilot in command decides; if weather stops a flight, it is rescheduled at no cost. February to May is the most reliable window: dry, calm seas and clear skies.

December and January are pleasant with occasional cool fronts, and the wet season brings quieter resorts and lower prices, with more weather risk.

Frequently asked questions
