Ambergris Caye is the largest of Belize's cayes and the one most visitors mean when they say they are going to "the islands." Its advantage is simple: the barrier reef runs just offshore along its whole eastern side, and there is a runway in the middle of its main town.
What it actually is
A long, low island off Belize's northern coast, with a Caribbean side facing the reef and a lagoon side facing the mainland.
San Pedro is the town, and nearly everything happens in or near it: restaurants, dive shops, the airstrip, the water-taxi docks.
Golf carts are the main transport. Most visitors move by cart, bicycle or on foot.
How the island divides
San Pedro town is lively, convenient and walkable, with the most choice for eating out.
South of town is quieter and residential, closer to the southern tip of the island and the marine reserve beyond it.
North of town, beyond the bridge, the island gets progressively emptier, with the most secluded resorts spread along the beach and reached by cart, boat or a longer ride.
The lagoon side faces west for sunsets, including Secret Beach.
Where to stay, in general terms
We describe areas rather than rate hotels. Town suits anyone who wants to walk to dinner; the north suits anyone who wants to stay put; the south sits between the two.
Ask any property how guests actually reach it. North of the bridge, it can mean a long cart ride or a boat transfer every day.
The reef, in one paragraph
The Belize Barrier Reef is part of the Mesoamerican Reef system, and off Ambergris it is visible from shore. The best-known snorkel and dive sites are at the island's southern end, in and around the Hol Chan marine reserve and Shark Ray Alley. Trips leave San Pedro daily.
Getting there
By air, it is a short hop. The San Pedro airstrip (SPR) is 29.6 nautical miles from Belize's international airport and 27.0 from the municipal airport in Belize City. Scheduled island flights run throughout the day. We show a "from" price per route; the final fare depends on the date, the group and the baggage, and is confirmed in writing before booking.
By water taxi, it is roughly an hour and a half from Belize City, with more luggage allowed.
A private flight makes sense when the schedule does not fit an international arrival, for groups, or for heavy dive gear. Caye Caulker is 11.3 nautical miles away, and Flores, for Tikal, 124.1.
Who Ambergris suits
Divers and snorkellers who want the reef within minutes.
Couples and families who want choice: restaurants, activities and accommodation at every level.
And first-time visitors to Belize who want the island experience without roughing it.
Who it doesn't suit
Anyone looking for an undeveloped island. Ambergris is the busy one; Caye Caulker, 11.3 nautical miles south, is the smaller, slower alternative.
And anyone expecting swimming beaches everywhere. Seagrass lines much of the shore; the best swimming is often from a dock.
Safety, briefly
Petty theft is the practical concern: valuables on the beach, carts left unlocked. Check your own government's current advisory before planning. We check travel advisories before confirming each route and tell you if they change.
When to go
We fly year-round. In the rainy season the pilot in command decides; if weather stops a flight, it is rescheduled at no cost. The drier months run roughly from February to May, with calmer seas and clearer water.
June to November is the wetter period and hurricane season, when rough weather can pause boat trips.
