The cayes or the mainland?

Reef on the islands, beaches in the south, jungle and ruins in the west. What each base does best, why most trips should split the nights, and where a short flight links them.

Belize packs three very different kinds of trip into a small country. The cayes are for the reef, Placencia for beaches, and the Cayo District for jungle and Maya sites, and no single base does all three well. Where you sleep decides what your trip is about.

The short answer

The cayes, if the trip is about the reef. Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker put snorkelling and diving minutes away.

Placencia, if the trip is about beaches and variety, with real swimming sand and day trips to both the reef and the jungle.

The Cayo District, if the trip is about the jungle and the ruins, with Xunantunich, caves and rivers close to San Ignacio.

Two of the three, if you have a week. Most good trips split the nights.

What the cayes do best

The reef, on the doorstep. Boats leave every morning, and the best-known snorkel sites are a short ride from Ambergris or Caye Caulker.

Easy arrival. Caye Caulker is 19.6 nautical miles from the international airport and Ambergris 29.6, a short hop on the day you land.

The island pace: golf carts, bicycles, sand streets and evenings by the water.

What Placencia does best

Beaches you can swim from, which the cayes mostly lack.

Balance. Reef trips by boat, the jaguar reserve inland, and a quieter village than Ambergris.

Space. Accommodation is spread along a long peninsula rather than packed into a town.

What the Cayo District does best

The Maya sites and the forest, with Xunantunich half a day from San Ignacio and Caracol a full day deeper in.

Activities: river trips, caves, hiking and birdwatching.

Cooler nights in the hills, and jungle lodges that are a destination in themselves.

What none of them does

None is close to all the others. The cayes and Cayo are a flight or boat plus a two-hour drive apart; Placencia is 74.4 nautical miles from Caye Caulker and 85.7 from Ambergris.

That is why the transfer between bases deserves planning, not just the bases themselves.

Who should choose what

First visit, a week: the cayes plus the Cayo District. Divers: the cayes, with a Blue Hole day. Couples wanting beaches: Placencia, possibly with a few nights on the cayes. Families: Placencia for the swimming, or Ambergris for the choice. Maya and nature enthusiasts: the Cayo District, with Tikal across the border. Short stay: one base only, usually the cayes.

The split that works

Three nights on the cayes and three in the Cayo District, or three on the cayes and three in Placencia.

Link them by air where you can. Placencia is 60.3 nautical miles from the international airport, and flights connect the islands and the south directly. We show a "from" price per route; the final fare depends on the date, the group and the baggage, and is confirmed in writing before booking.

Three bases in a week is the limit; beyond that, the trip becomes transfers.

Practical notes

Book the islands early for the dry season, and Placencia too: both have limited rooms.

Travel between towns by day, as current advisories recommend. We check travel advisories before confirming each route and tell you if they change.

When to go

We fly year-round. In the rainy season the pilot in command decides; if weather stops a flight, it is rescheduled at no cost. February to May suits every base, with calm seas and dry roads.

In the wet season, the cayes stay the driest part of the country, while the south and the jungle roads see the most rain.
