Belize for remote work

An English-speaking country on Central Time with a pegged dollar and a remote-work programme. Where the internet holds, what the island trade-offs are.

Belize has become a remote-work base for reasons that are easy to list. English is the official language, the country runs on Central Time all year, the Belize dollar is pegged to the US dollar, and there is a government programme aimed at remote workers. For anyone working North American hours, few places combine a reef, a jungle and that much practical ease.

There are also trade-offs worth understanding before committing to a month.

The structural advantages

Language. Leases, bank visits, doctors and daily life all work in English.

Time zone. Belize stays on Central Time without a seasonal change, which gives a stable overlap with North America. For European employers, afternoons in Belize are already evening at home, which needs planning.

Currency. A fixed rate against the US dollar removes exchange-rate risk for anyone paid in that currency.

Access. Miami is 667.2 nautical miles from the international airport, with direct flights to several US hubs.

The remote-work programme

Belize has run a programme for remote workers that allows longer stays than a standard tourist entry, subject to conditions set by the authorities.

Conditions change. Check the current position with Belize's immigration department or tourism authority, or an immigration lawyer, not a travel article, including this one. We do not advise on visas; we do tell you the formalities at each end of the flight.

Where people settle

Ambergris Caye, the most practical island, with the widest choice of rentals, restaurants and co-working options, 29.6 nautical miles from the international airport.

Caye Caulker, cheaper and slower, 19.6 nautical miles away, with more variable infrastructure.

Placencia, for beaches and a quieter community, 60.3 nautical miles from the international airport.

San Ignacio, inland, for lower costs, cooler nights and the jungle on the doorstep.

Where the connection holds

The main towns have fibre or reliable broadband in many places, but quality varies from one rental to the next, especially on the islands.

Ask for a speed test rather than a description, specifically for upload, and ask what happens during a power cut. The rentals that work have a backup.

The cost, honestly

Belize is not the cheapest country in the region. Many goods are imported, and island prices in particular run higher than on the mainland or in neighbouring countries.

Housing on the islands is the biggest cost, and short-term rentals are priced for visitors. Longer leases usually bring better rates.

The island trade-off

Island life means everything arrives by boat or plane, from groceries to deliveries, and weather can interrupt both.

Getting off the island quickly matters for work trips, visits home or medical needs. Scheduled flights run all day, and a private flight can cover the gaps. We show a "from" price per route; the final fare depends on the date, the group and the baggage, and is confirmed in writing before booking.

Things to settle before you come

Your insurance and your employer's policy. Check medical evacuation cover, since facilities are limited, and whether your employer restricts the countries you can work from.

Your own government's advisory, and the district of Belize City it singles out, which most remote workers never need to enter. We check travel advisories before confirming each route and tell you if they change.

The pattern that works

A base with excursions, rather than constant movement: a month on one island or in Placencia, with weekends inland or on the reef.

We fly year-round. In the rainy season the pilot in command decides; if weather stops a flight, it is rescheduled at no cost.
