The reef is Caribbean. The swell and the whales are Pacific. And on both sides there are beaches that look inviting and are not swimmable at all.
The reef is Caribbean
The Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System runs roughly 1,125 km (700 mi) from Mexico to northeastern Nicaragua — the second longest barrier reef in the world, holding more than 90% of the marine species known in the Caribbean.
Belize's section is the largest reef system in the Northern Hemisphere, UNESCO-listed since 1996.
Honduras's Bay Islands sit on the same system, with the park extending 25 km (15 mi) from each island's coast.
And Bocas del Toro's park holds 95% of the coral species in the Panamanian Caribbean.
On the Pacific side: Coiba is the exception — one of the few marine World Heritage sites on the planet, with more than 700 fish species recorded — but it is rocky reef and pelagics, not a barrier system.
Costa Rica's Caribbean reef is small, and southern
It is in the Cahuita–Puerto Viejo–Manzanillo corridor.
The northern Caribbean coast is wetland and sandbar over alluvial plain, with continuous sediment input that prevents coral development.
Which means no reef and no surf breaks in the north — but one of the Caribbean's longest-running tarpon fisheries, fished since 1950, at Barra del Colorado, with no road access at all.
The swell is Pacific — except in Bocas
The eastern Pacific receives southern swells during the austral winter, which is the region's biggest period.
El Salvador
March through October, with El Tunco 40 minutes from the capital.
Panama's Pacific
tide decides. On a rising tide most breaks improve; on a falling or low tide performance drops and, where the bottom is exposed, risk rises.
And the Caribbean exception
Bocas del Toro's surf season runs November through March — exactly the worst months to dive there, because swell stirs sediment.
Which makes Bocas two trips, not one
The whales are Pacific
Costa Rica's southern Pacific receives humpback populations from both hemispheres, each in its own winter — two separate seasons with a quiet stretch between.
And Azuero, Panama, where they come to calve, taking advantage of the warm water — which means mothers with calves and stricter distances.
You do not swim with whales. It is the rule, not a suggestion.
The whale sharks are Caribbean
Utila, Honduras — no fixed season, unlike most destinations worldwide. Snorkel only, under 2008 National Congress guidelines: three metres from the animal, four from the tail.
And Gladden Spit, Belize — presence tracks snapper spawning, following lunar phase within specific months.
The beaches that are not swimmable
Worth knowing, because they cause disappointment.
Tortuguero — no coral reef, and the sea is not swimmable, due to strong currents and shark presence. The beach is for walking, for nesting turtles and for the light.
And reef-bottom breaks at low tide, across the region — the break sits closer to the bottom, and a coral cut infects easily in tropical climate.
Do not assume permanent lifeguard service on any of these coasts.
Which side for what
Reef and snorkeling
Caribbean. Belize, the Bay Islands, Bocas.
Surf: Pacific, March through October — or Bocas, November through March.
Whales: Pacific. Drake Bay's two seasons, Azuero's calving.
Whale sharks
Caribbean. Utila or Gladden Spit.
Wildlife density
Pacific. Corcovado's large mammals, from basalt 50 to 65 million years old and 4,000 to 5,000 mm (157–197 in) of annual rain.
And sportfishing
both, but differently — Pacific billfish offshore with catch and release standard, and Caribbean tarpon in wetland.
The sheltered water, on both sides
Golfo Dulce, Pacific — one of only four tropical fjords on Earth, with sheltered water inside and open Pacific outside.
Belize's lagoon, Caribbean — between the barrier and the coast, extensive reef plus calm water.
And Placencia's lagoon, which stays navigable when the outer reef does not.
Water temperature, both coasts
25 to 30 °C (77–86 °F) across the region's reef and coastal destinations.
No thick wetsuit anywhere — the season is decided by visibility, not temperature.
Planning Pacific vs Caribbean Central America
Resolve the fixed points first — permits, caps and any hard window — since those determine your dates rather than the other way around.
Then the season, which in this region decides more than the month suggests.
And keep a day of flexibility if the objective depends on weather, light or tide.

Frequently asked questions
Which coast has the reef?
The Caribbean. The Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System is the second longest in the world, with Belize's section the largest in the Northern Hemisphere. Coiba is the Pacific exception, but it is rocky reef rather than a barrier.
Is there reef on the Pacific side?
Coiba, in Panama — one of the few marine World Heritage sites on the planet, with more than 700 fish species. It is rocky reef and pelagics rather than a barrier system.
Which coast is better in Costa Rica?
The Pacific for wildlife density and whales, the southern Caribbean for the reef. The northern Caribbean is wetland with no reef and no surf, but it has tarpon fished since 1950.
When is the Caribbean calm?
For Bocas del Toro, outside the November-to-March surf season, which is when swell stirs sediment and drops underwater visibility.
Where can you not swim?
Tortuguero, which has no reef and strong currents with shark presence. And reef-bottom breaks at low tide, where the break sits closer to the bottom.
Do you need a wetsuit?
No. Water runs 25 to 30 °C on both coasts, so the season is decided by visibility rather than temperature.
