Guatemala Entry Requirements

A four-country agreement that treats your days as shared, and a visa-free stay that can be shorter than you think. What gets checked, and what to confirm.

Entering Guatemala is straightforward for most visitors, and there is one rule that catches enough people to lead with. Guatemala belongs to the CA-4, a shared movement area with Honduras, El Salvador and Nicaragua, which means your days in one count against all four.

Rules change, faster than any article. Confirm the current position with the Guatemalan authorities or your airline before relying on it. We do not advise on visas; we do tell you the formalities at each end of the flight.

The CA-4, explained

The four countries operate a common area for tourist stays. Moving between them does not reset your clock, and the permitted period applies to the group rather than per country.

Why it catches people: a traveller doing Guatemala, then Honduras, then Nicaragua assumes each border grants fresh time. It does not, and the shortfall surfaces on departure.

Belize and Mexico are outside the CA-4. This matters here more than in Honduras, because the Petén border with Belize is a common crossing and a trip through it works differently from one that stays inside the four.

Extensions exist, handled by immigration rather than at a border, and the process is best started before you need it.

What actually gets checked

A passport with enough validity. Six months beyond entry is the common requirement, and airlines enforce it whatever the border does.

An onward ticket, checked by airlines at boarding more often than by immigration on arrival — so not being able to show one is a problem before you leave.

And where you are staying, occasionally, which a first-night booking settles.

Arriving

Guatemala City is the international gateway and effectively the only one for arrivals. Flores at 145,1 nautical miles serves the Petén domestically.

There is no international arrival at Flores for most routings, which matters if you are planning to enter from Belize — Belize City is 96,9 nautical miles away, and that is an international sector with formalities at each end. We show a "from" price per route; the final fare depends on the date, the group and the baggage, and is confirmed in writing before booking.

The land borders

The Belize crossing at Melchor de Mencos is the one most visitors use, on the Tikal to Belize route, and it is a straightforward but slow land border.

The Honduras crossings serve the Copán route, and Copán Ruinas is close enough to the border that a day trip from Guatemala is a common arrangement — though it is still an international crossing.

And the Mexico crossings in the north and west, which are used by overland travellers and are a different category of journey.

Things that are not entry requirements but get asked

Vaccination. Requirements depend on where you are arriving from rather than on Guatemala itself, and the yellow fever question only arises for travellers from certain countries. Check with a travel health service rather than a travel article.

Cash. The currency is the quetzal. Dollars are accepted in tourist areas at poor rates and are far less useful than in Panama.

And travel advisories, which are not entry requirements at all but do affect the validity of some insurance policies. Read yours. We check travel advisories before confirming each route and tell you if they change.

Departure

Departure taxes may apply depending on your ticket and routing, sometimes included and sometimes not, and clarifying at booking beats discovering at the counter.

And the CA-4 clock applies on exit, which is where an overstay surfaces. If your regional trip is long, count your days across all four countries before you reach the airport.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a visa for Guatemala?

Most visitors do not, but rules change: confirm with the Guatemalan authorities or your airline.

What is the CA-4?

A shared area with Honduras, El Salvador and Nicaragua. Days in one count against all four, and crossing does not reset the clock.

Does Belize count as part of it?

No. Belize and Mexico are outside the CA-4, which matters on the common Tikal to Belize route.

What gets checked on arrival?

Passport validity, an onward ticket — usually by the airline at boarding — and occasionally your first night's address.

Can I fly into Flores internationally?

Not on most routings. Guatemala City is the gateway; Flores serves the Petén domestically and by international sector with formalities.

Where does an overstay surface?

On departure. Count your days across all four CA-4 countries before you reach the airport.
