Entering El Salvador is procedurally straightforward for most visitors. El Salvador belongs to the CA-4 with Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua, so your days in one count against all four — and it is the fourth country in that group, which is worth knowing if your trip takes in more than one.
Rules change, and faster than an article can follow. Confirm the current position with the Salvadoran authorities or your airline before relying on anything below. We do not advise on visas; we do tell you the formalities at each end of the flight.
The CA-4
The four countries operate a common area for tourist stays. Moving between them does not reset your clock, and the permitted period applies to the group rather than per country.
Belize, Mexico and Costa Rica are outside it. A trip that continues to Liberia — 267,8 nautical miles from the international airport — works differently from one that stays within the four.
Extensions exist, handled by immigration rather than at a border, and best started before you need them.
The tourist card
Some nationalities are required to buy a tourist card on arrival, in cash, and others are not.
Check whether yours does, and carry small US dollar notes rather than assuming card payment.
What gets checked
A passport with enough validity. Six months beyond entry is the common requirement, and airlines enforce it.
An onward ticket, checked by airlines at boarding more often than at the border.
Where you are staying, which a first-night booking settles.
Identification during your stay
This matters more here than in most countries. Current travel advisories recommend carrying valid identification at all times, with checkpoints common under the emergency measures in place.
Carry your passport or a clear copy, as your own government's advice specifies, and keep separate copies in case the original is lost or held. We check travel advisories before confirming each route and tell you if they change.
Arriving
The international airport is on the Pacific coast, south of San Salvador, and is where almost everyone lands.
Private flights use Ilopango, inside the capital, 16,0 nautical miles away.
Regional sectors are international: Guatemala City is 109,7 nautical miles from the international airport and Tegucigalpa 113,5, with clearance at each end, planned rather than assumed. We show a "from" price per route; the final fare depends on the date, the group and the baggage, and is confirmed in writing before booking.
The land borders
The Guatemalan crossings in the west serve the route to Guatemala City and Antigua, and sit inside the CA-4.
The Honduran crossings in the north and east serve the routes towards Copán and Tegucigalpa, also inside the CA-4.
Both are straightforward but can be slow, particularly for anyone arriving by bus.
Things that are not entry requirements but get asked
Vaccination. Requirements depend on where you are arriving from rather than on El Salvador itself. Check with a travel health service.
Cash. The currency is the US dollar, which simplifies things for many visitors.
And travel advisories, which are not entry requirements but affect some insurance policies and are worth reading for this country in particular.
Departure
Departure charges may apply depending on your ticket, sometimes included and sometimes not.
And the CA-4 clock applies on exit. If your regional trip is long, count your days across all four countries before you reach the airport.
