How to Get Around El Salvador

The smallest country in Central America, where almost everything is a short drive. Where the roads work, why flying inside the country makes no sense, and where it does.

El Salvador is the smallest country in Central America, and getting around it is simpler than anywhere else in the region. You can drive from one end to the other in an afternoon, and most of what visitors come for sits within two hours of the capital.

That changes the question entirely. Here, the useful decision is not how to cross the country, but where to base.

The main roads

Two highways do most of the work. The Pan-American runs east to west through the interior, past San Salvador, and the coastal highway follows the Pacific shore.

Between them, the main routes are paved and busy, with the capital as the hub.

Minor roads into the hills — the Ruta de las Flores, the volcano parks, the north — are slower and winding, but short.

Typical journey times

San Salvador to the surf coast, around an hour.

San Salvador to the Ruta de las Flores, an hour and a half to two hours.

San Salvador to Suchitoto, around an hour and a quarter.

San Salvador to the eastern region, three hours or more, which is the longest drive most visitors make.

The international airport to the coast, half an hour to three quarters.

Why flying inside the country makes no sense

The distances are too short. By the time you have reached an airfield and flown, you could have driven.

We would rather say that than sell you a sector you do not need. For El Salvador itself, the answer is a car, a driver or a shuttle.

Where flying does make sense

Ilopango (ILS) is the general aviation and charter field on the eastern edge of San Salvador, 16,0 nautical miles from the international airport. Private flights leave from there, inside the city. The specific aircraft is assigned on confirmation, based on passenger count, baggage and the destination field.

And the regional sectors, where El Salvador works as a hub. Guatemala City is 97,5 nautical miles from Ilopango; Tegucigalpa 113,5 from the international airport; San Pedro Sula, for Copán, 137,6; and Managua 186,2. We show a "from" price per route; the final fare depends on the date, the group and the baggage, and is confirmed in writing before booking.

Those sectors are what turn a week in El Salvador into a two- or three-country trip without the border days.

Shuttles, buses and driving

Tourist shuttles connect the capital, the coast and the Ruta de las Flores, and they are the simplest option for most visitors.

The local buses — the brightly painted converted school buses — are the everyday network: cheap, crowded and frequent.

Ride-hailing apps operate in San Salvador and are the easy way around the capital.

Self-driving is viable on the main roads, with short distances. The usual cautions apply: night driving, heavy traffic around the capital, and speed bumps on the smaller roads.

Check your own government's current advice before planning, which covers road travel as well as everything else. We check travel advisories before confirming each route and tell you if they change.

When the season changes the plan

We fly year-round. In the rainy season the pilot in command decides; if weather stops a flight, it is rescheduled at no cost. The wet months, roughly May to October, bring heavy afternoon rain that slows the mountain roads and occasionally floods low stretches.

Plan drives for the morning in that season, and give the hill routes more time than the distance suggests.
