A Ten-Day Panama Itinerary

The first length at which the Caribbean and the Pacific stop being an either-or. Two routes that work, one that does not, and the version with more rest.

Seven days in Panama forces a choice between coasts. Ten days removes it, and that is the whole reason to add the extra three.

It is also the length at which the country stops being a hub with one spoke and starts being several genuinely different places.

What ten days buys over seven

A second region, or a first one that is actually hard to reach.

And slack. A seven-day trip that loses a day to weather loses a seventh of itself; a ten-day trip absorbs it. In the wet months that difference is the entire argument for the extra days. We fly year-round. In the rainy season the pilot in command decides; if weather stops a flight, it is rescheduled at no cost.

Route one: city, Caribbean, Pacific

Days one to three: Panama City. The Canal, Casco Viejo, the food, and the watershed.

Days four to seven: Guna Yala at 81,1 nautical miles, or Bocas at 161,3. The Caribbean half — islands, and almost nothing else on purpose.

Days eight to ten: Contadora at 37,2 nautical miles, or the Pacific coast. The easy ending, close to the airport and forgiving of a tight departure.

Ending near the city is deliberate. The last move is the one to protect, and this route makes it short.

Route two: city, highlands, Caribbean

Days one to two: Panama City, shorter, because this route has more in it.

Days three to six: Boquete via David at 174,4 nautical miles. Coffee, cloud forest, cool evenings, and the volcano if you want it.

Days seven to ten: Bocas del Toro, over the mountains or by air.

This is the western route and it is the better one for a second visit. Highlands and Caribbean, cool and hot, and both ends of the country's weather in one trip.

The route that does not work

Four regions. It is the obvious temptation at this length and it produces four travel days out of ten.

Or Guna Yala plus Bocas. Both are Caribbean, both are remote, and they sit at opposite ends of that coast. Doing both means returning through the city between them, which costs you two of your ten days to see two versions of the same idea. Pick one.

Where flying changes this itinerary

More than at seven days, because the regions are further apart.

Route one: the Caribbean leg is the clear case. Guna Yala has no road at all, so it is air or an open boat crossing.

Route two: the Boquete–Bocas move is the one. Over the mountains it is a long day; as a short leg it is an afternoon. We show a "from" price per route; the final fare depends on the date, the group and the baggage, and is confirmed in writing before booking.

And on both: the final move back toward the airport. A tight connection after a long transfer is how trips end badly, and it is the leg worth spending on even if you drove everything else.

The version with more rest

Same length, two places, longer in each. Some travellers prefer this and almost nobody regrets it.

Ten days across two regions is a holiday. Ten across four is a tour. Both are valid; they are not the same thing, and it is worth knowing which you are booking.

Adding the Azuero option

For travellers who want culture rather than a second beach, Pedasí at 98,2 nautical miles replaces the Pacific island leg in route one and gives you colonial towns and empty coast instead.

It is the version almost nobody books and the one repeat visitors tend to choose.

Frequently asked questions

What do ten days buy over seven?

A second region, or a genuinely remote first one, plus enough slack to absorb a lost weather day.

Can I see both coasts in ten days?

Yes, properly. That is the main reason to add the extra three days.

Can I combine Guna Yala and Bocas?

Not well. Both are remote Caribbean and at opposite ends of that coast, so you would return through the city between them.

Which route suits a second visit?

The western one: city, Boquete and Bocas. Highlands and Caribbean in one trip.

Which leg is worth flying?

The Caribbean one on route one, the Boquete–Bocas move on route two, and the final leg back toward the airport on both.

What if I want culture instead of a second beach?

Replace the Pacific island leg with Pedasí and the Azuero peninsula. Repeat visitors tend to choose it.
