Every list of Panama's best places contains the same six entries in a different order. The order is not the useful part — knowing which one fits you is, and that depends more on what you want than on what is objectively better.
If it is your first trip
Panama City. Two days, not one. The Canal, Casco Viejo and the food, and the only capital in the region that repays the time.
Contadora at 37,2 nautical miles. The closest good islands, reachable in a morning, and the one that fits almost any length of trip.
That pairing is the standard week and it is standard because it works.
If you have been before
Guna Yala at 81,1 nautical miles. The one people come back for: sand islands, no infrastructure, and an autonomous territory with its own rules.
The Azuero peninsula. Colonial towns, the country's oldest festivals, and almost no foreign visitors.
And the Darién edge, with an established operator, for rainforest that has no equivalent in the region.
If you want one specific thing
Diving: the Pacific, Coiba and the Gulf of Chiriquí via David at 174,4 nautical miles. Cool weather: Boquete, the only place in Panama you need a jacket. Surf: Playa Venao, or Bastimentos in season. Birds: Pipeline Road, forty minutes from the capital, and among the best in the Americas. A resort: the Pacific coast an hour west of the city.
The two overrated for a first trip
Said plainly, because a list without this is not worth reading.
Bocas del Toro, for visitors expecting Caribbean dry-season sun. It is genuinely good and it rains in most months, and people who booked it in January because that is Panama's dry season planned against the wrong calendar.
And Guna Yala for anyone who wanted comfort. It is extraordinary; it is also basic in a way the photographs do not convey. It is not overrated as a place. It is overrated as a first-timer's beach holiday.
The one everyone skips and should not
The canal watershed. Soberanía and Gatún Lake, twenty to forty minutes from downtown, with monkeys, toucans and one of the world's famous birding trails.
Visitors book beaches three hours away and never learn that the best wildlife access in the country is a taxi ride from their hotel. It is the most underused asset in Panamanian tourism.
How to actually choose
Choose by what you want your mornings to look like. Wildlife means the watershed or the Pacific. Water means an island. Culture means Azuero or the city. Cool means Boquete.
Then look at what reaching it costs, because that decides whether it fits your itinerary rather than your preferences. Guna Yala and Bocas cost the most and repay it if you have the days. We show a "from" price per route; the final fare depends on the date, the group and the baggage, and is confirmed in writing before booking. The specific aircraft is assigned on confirmation, based on passenger count, baggage and the destination field.
The season layer
We fly year-round. In the rainy season the pilot in command decides; if weather stops a flight, it is rescheduled at no cost. The ranking changes by month, more here than in neighbouring countries, because the two coasts run opposite calendars.
Whichever month you have, one side of the country is having a good one. That is the most useful planning sentence in Panamanian travel, and it means the date should pick the destination.
