Birding in Panama

More species than Costa Rica in a smaller country, and one of the world's famous trails forty minutes from a capital. Where the birds are, and what reaching them costs.

Panama has a longer bird list than Costa Rica in about a third less area, and the reason is geographic rather than ecological. It is the land bridge, so North and South American species overlap along a narrow country.

That is the strongest nature argument Panama has and it is almost never made, which is why the country is quietly one of the best birding destinations in the hemisphere and loudly known for a canal.

Pipeline Road

The famous one, and it is forty minutes from downtown.

A single morning here can produce a list that takes a week elsewhere, and the Christmas count along this corridor has repeatedly been among the highest in the world.

Being twenty minutes from a hotel with room service is not a normal feature of great birding, and it is the practical reason Panama suits birders with limited time.

The other regions

The Chiriquí highlands via David at 174,4 nautical miles. Quetzals, and the highland endemics shared with Costa Rica's Talamanca. Cold, wet and worth it.

The Caribbean lowlands and Bocas at 161,3 nautical miles, for a different assemblage entirely.

Guna Yala at 81,1 nautical miles, which is not a birding destination in itself but produces seabirds and migrants that the mainland does not.

And Darién, which holds the species serious listers come for — harpy eagles among them — and which requires care. Parts are a genuine security concern and the situation changes; check current government advice and travel only with an established operator working there routinely. We check travel advisories before confirming each route and tell you if they change.

The migration, which is the other advantage

Panama is a funnel. The narrow isthmus concentrates raptor migration to a degree few places on earth match, and the autumn passage over the canal area can run to hundreds of thousands of birds in a day.

That happens in October and November, which are the wettest months and the ones most visitors avoid. The people who know this book exactly then.

What decides what you see

The guide. As everywhere, and more here because the species density means knowing where to look matters more than looking harder.

And the hour. Dawn, every time. The gap between a seven o'clock start and a ten o'clock one is larger than the gap between two reserves.

Practicalities

Reserve access is regulated and some areas require permits or guides. Park fees and permits are not included in the flight. Check for your specific site near your date.

Optics and long lenses are a volume problem on small aircraft, not a weight one. What fits depends on the aircraft serving the airfield rather than on a published allowance. The allowance is calculated by weight when you quote in the app; tell us if you carry bulky gear. Ask with real measurements before booking.

And playback is restricted or prohibited in several reserves. The guides say so, and the good ones refuse.

Building the trip

Two regions, not four. The canal watershed plus the highlands is the standard pair and covers lowland and montane assemblages properly.

Three nights minimum in each, because the first morning goes on learning where things are.

Consecutive dawns in one place beat single mornings in three. We fly year-round. In the rainy season the pilot in command decides; if weather stops a flight, it is rescheduled at no cost. The wet months are more active, which is convenient given that the migration peak sits inside them. We show a "from" price per route; the final fare depends on the date, the group and the baggage, and is confirmed in writing before booking.
