Panama's protected areas are unusually spread across the difficulty scale. One of the best is twenty minutes from downtown; another is a province that most travellers should not enter casually, and the gap between them is wider than in any neighbouring country.
Soberanía, the easy one
The park along the canal, and the reason Panama City is a serious birding destination without anyone planning it that way.
Pipeline Road is famous among birders worldwide and it starts about forty minutes from the towers. Hundreds of species, howler monkeys, and a chance of seeing more in a morning here than in a week elsewhere.
This is the most underrated thing in Panama tourism. Visitors book beaches and never learn that one of the continent's great birding trails is a taxi ride from their hotel.
Coiba, the island
A former penal colony in the Pacific, which is why its reef and forest survived: nobody could go there.
It is now a marine park and a UNESCO site, with diving that is the best in the country and among the better in the region — large pelagics, sharks, and water that is genuinely wild.
Access is regulated, visitor numbers are managed and overnight options are limited. Park fees and permits are not included in the flight. This is not a place to improvise, and the practical route in is by boat from Santa Catalina on the Veraguas coast.
The Chiriquí highlands parks
Volcán Barú for the summit walk, and La Amistad, the binational park shared with Costa Rica, for cloud forest and quetzals.
Both are reached from David at 174,4 nautical miles, and both are cool and wet in a way the rest of the country is not.
Bastimentos, the accessible marine one
Off Bocas del Toro at 161,3 nautical miles. Reef, mangrove, and the beaches that make the archipelago's reputation. Easy to reach and busy in season.
Darién, and the honest paragraph
The province on the Colombian border contains some of the most intact rainforest in the Americas and some of the highest-risk terrain in the region.
Parts of it are a genuine security concern, and the situation changes. Check your government's current travel advice before considering any of it, and go only with an established operator who works there routinely. We check travel advisories before confirming each route and tell you if they change.
There are legitimate, well-run lodges on the accessible edge, and there is a wide margin between those and the interior. Anyone who tells you Darién is simply fine, or simply forbidden, is oversimplifying a place that is neither.
What Panama has that its neighbours do not
Two oceans close together, which means two entirely different marine ecosystems within a day of each other.
And a land bridge, which is why the bird list here is longer than Costa Rica's despite the smaller area: species from two continents overlap in a narrow country.
That second fact is the strongest nature argument Panama has, and it is almost never used.
When to go
We fly year-round. In the rainy season the pilot in command decides; if weather stops a flight, it is rescheduled at no cost. Wildlife is more active in the wet months, as it is throughout the region, and the forests are loudest then.
Dawn, in every park, in every month. The gap between a seven o'clock start and a ten o'clock one is larger than the gap between two parks. We show a "from" price per route; the final fare depends on the date, the group and the baggage, and is confirmed in writing before booking.
Frequently asked questions
Which park is easiest to reach?
Soberanía, about forty minutes from downtown Panama City. Pipeline Road there is famous among birders worldwide.
What makes Coiba special?
It was a penal colony, so its reef and forest survived. The diving is the best in the country and access is regulated.
Where are the cloud forests?
The Chiriquí highlands: Volcán Barú and La Amistad, the binational park shared with Costa Rica, both reached from David.
Is Darién safe to visit?
Parts are a genuine security concern and the situation changes. Check current government advice and go only with an established operator.
Why is Panama's bird list so long?
It is a land bridge, so species from two continents overlap in a narrow country. It is the strongest nature argument Panama has.
