Costa Rica's distances are short. Its roads are not. San José to La Fortuna is 71 km (44 mi) — and three to five hours by road. That gap is what decides how much fits in your trip.
The real transfer times
| Destination | From San José by road | By air |
|---|---|---|
| La Fortuna / Arenal | 3–5 h | 15 min |
| Tortuguero | 3–4 h + 1–1.5 h boat | 20 min |
| Limón / Caribbean south | most of a day | 25 min |
| Drake Bay | full day, 4WD, river crossings | 30 min |
| Liberia / Guanacaste | 4–5 h | 35 min |
| Osa / Puerto Jiménez | full day | 40 min |
Which means: by road, transfers consume the trip. By air, they disappear.
Five days
By road: two destinations, realistically. Arenal and one coast, with two travel days out of five.
By air: four or five destinations, with no travel days at all.
A five-day air itinerary: Arenal, Tortuguero, Manuel Antonio, Guanacaste — each a full day on the ground.
Seven days
By road: three destinations, with the classic Arenal–Monteverde–Manuel Antonio circuit.
By air: the same three plus Osa, which by road is a full day each way and effectively excludes itself from a week-long trip.
Which is the real difference: Corcovado becomes reachable.
Ten days
By road: four to five destinations, still losing days to transfer.
By air: both coasts, both Caribbean corridors, the Osa Peninsula and the northern zone — with time to do each properly.
The bookings that decide your dates
This is what most itineraries get backwards
Eleven Costa Rican parks sell tickets online only, with no gate window: Poás, Manuel Antonio, Irazú, Braulio Carrillo, Tapantí, Tortuguero, Isla San Lucas, Chirripó, Tenorio, Rincón de la Vieja and Carara.
And several have caps that fill
Manuel Antonio
2,000 visitors a day, sold online only, no reentry. Book 2 to 3 weeks ahead in high season.
Poás: one-hour time slots, 50 visitors each, opening four weeks ahead. At Easter and Christmas they can be fully booked.
Corcovado: 200 a day, guide mandatory, and the permit should be resolved before you buy flights.
Río Celeste
1,200 a day and 500 on the trail — two separate caps.
Caño Island: ten divers at a time, booked before flights.
Which means: park reservations come first, and the itinerary is built around them.
The timing traps
Corcovado runs 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., while wildlife moves 5:30 to 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. — the hours exclude both windows.
Rincón de la Vieja's waterfall trails close to entry at 12:00 noon.
Arenal's cone is clearest early, with cloud building through the morning.
And Tortuguero's turtle nesting happens after dark, which no day trip covers.
A seven-day air itinerary
Day 1 — Arrive, Arenal in the afternoon Day 2 — Arenal: bridges, rafting, hot springs Day 3 — Fly to Tortuguero, 20 min. Dawn canals Day 4 — Fly to Osa, 40 min. Dawn window outside the park Day 5 — Corcovado with permit, 8:00 entry Day 6 — Caño Island or Golfo Dulce crossing Day 7 — Fly to San José, depart
Zero travel days. By road, days 3 and 4 would be spent moving.
What you cannot skip
Tortuguero nesting, if that is the season — it requires a night.
Corcovado dawn, unless you overnight at Sirena or land before the gate opens.
And the boat legs — Tortuguero, Caño Island, Golfo Dulce — which no aircraft replaces.
Before you plan
Book the parks first. They determine your dates, not the other way around.
Check which airstrip serves your reserved sector, particularly for Corcovado.
Keep a day of flexibility if weather-dependent activities are the point — Arenal's cone, Río Celeste's colour, whale seasons.
And confirm 4WD for any ground sector that needs it.
Planning how many days in Costa Rica
Resolve the fixed points first — permits, caps and any hard window — since those determine your dates rather than the other way around.
Then the season, which in this region decides more than the month suggests.
And keep a day of flexibility if the objective depends on weather, light or tide.
