From Palmerola, the whole country is under 50 minutes. Copán lies west, the Bay Islands north — and both fit in the same day, which is what makes Honduras a shorter trip than its neighbours.
How many days in Honduras: the distances
From Palmerola (XPL), in Comayagua:
| Destination | Distance | Flight time |
|---|---|---|
| Tegucigalpa (TGU) | 56 km (35 mi) | 15 minutes |
| San Pedro Sula (SAP) | 123 km (76 mi) | 25 minutes |
| La Ceiba (LCE) | 172 km (107 mi) | 35 minutes |
| Utila (UII) | 208 km (129 mi) | 45 minutes |
| Roatán (RTB) | 245 km (152 mi) | 50 minutes |
And the islands connect to each other in minutes — Roatán to Utila is roughly a ten-minute hop, against most of a day by ferry and road.
Four days
Day 1 — Copán, in the west Day 2 — Fly to Roatán, 50 min. Reef Day 3 — Fly to Utila, 10 min. Whale shark snorkel Day 4 — Return, depart
Maya site and Caribbean reef in four days. By road, those are two separate trips.
Seven days
Adds the interior and the north coast.
Celaque National Park, with 24,040 hectares (59,404 acres), around 770 plant species and the country's highest peak. Its name comes from Lenca and refers to water — the massif is headwater for numerous rivers.
La Tigra, 7,571 hectares (18,708 acres) just 15 km (9 mi) from Tegucigalpa — cloud forest at a capital's doorstep. Both were established 1 January 1980 under Decree 976-80, the founding act of the country's protected area system.
And Pico Bonito, above La Ceiba — not San Pedro Sula, a common itinerary error — at 2,435 m (7,989 ft) with 46 rivers, plus the Río Cangrejal for rafting.
Copán, in detail
A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1980
, with roughly 3,400 buildings identified across the valley.
Entry $15, hours 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., tunnels paid separately with a maximum of 10 people at a time and a guide required.
One thing worth knowing
the guide is mandatory only in the tunnels, not on the main site — whatever you may be told at the gate.
The Hieroglyphic Stairway: was completed by the fifteenth ruler in 755 AD, measures 10 m (33 ft) wide, incorporates 15 stelae, and is the longest known Maya hieroglyphic text.
And Altar Q depicts 16 of the 18 monarchs: of the dynasty.
The islands
They sit on the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System, holding more than 90% of the marine species known in the Caribbean.
The marine park extends 25 km (15 mi) from each island's coast, totaling roughly 650,000 hectares (1.6 million acres).
Water at 25 to 28 °C (77–82 °F) year round.
And Honduras is one of the few countries where local reef health improves year over year, sustained by the Roatán Marine Park, an NGO formed in January 2005 by dive operators and local businesses.
The rule that shapes your last day
Do not dive on your departure day. Cabin pressure reduction after a dive can trigger decompression sickness.
Snorkeling carries no restriction, which makes it the option for the day you fly.
And in Utila, whale sharks are snorkel-only anyway — diving with them is prohibited under guidelines approved by Honduras's National Congress in 2008, with three metres from the animal, four from the tail.
Which means the whale shark encounter fits on your departure day. Reef diving does not.
Where the chamber is
Roatán's only hyperbaric chamber is at Anthony's Key, in Sandy Bay.
A decompression incident on the east coast or at Camp Bay means crossing the island by road.
Ask how long that transfer takes from your accommodation before booking a dive centre.
One thing you do not need a charter for
Roatán takes direct international flights from several US cities.
If Roatán is your whole trip, fly commercial. A charter earns its price on the hop between islands and the mainland connection — not the arrival.
The base itself
Palmerola is in Comayagua, which holds the oldest working clock in the Americas, in a cathedral opened on 8 December 1711.
Which makes it the only destination in the country requiring no flight at all — you see it before departing or on arrival.
Before you plan
Check the cruise ship calendar for Roatán — ships dock at Coxen Hole and Mahogany, and West Bay fills on those days.
Confirm Copán's hours: 6:00 to 6:00.
Pico Bonito is in La Ceiba, not San Pedro Sula.
Reef-safe sunscreen.
And consult your own government's current travel advisory before planning.

Frequently asked questions
Is 4 days enough for Honduras?
For Copán and the Bay Islands, yes. From Palmerola the whole country is under 50 minutes, so Maya site and reef fit in four days. By road, those are two separate trips.
Can you do Copán and Roatán?
Yes, and it is the itinerary Honduras is built for. Copán lies west, Roatán 50 minutes north from Palmerola — Maya site in the morning, reef in the afternoon.
What is the best Honduras itinerary?
Four days covers Copán, Roatán and Utila. Seven adds Celaque, La Tigra and Pico Bonito on the north coast.
Do you need a guide at Copán?
Only in the tunnels, which are paid separately with a maximum of 10 people at a time. On the main site circuit, no — whatever you may be told at the gate.
Where is Pico Bonito?
Above La Ceiba, 35 minutes from Palmerola — not above San Pedro Sula, which is a common itinerary error costing several hours of road travel to correct.
Can you dive the day you fly home?
No. Snorkeling is the alternative, and in Utila whale sharks are snorkel-only anyway, which makes that encounter fit on your departure day.
