Guatemala has the scale. Belize has the pairing
That is the whole comparison, and which one wins depends on whether the Maya sites are your trip or part of it.

Pick Guatemala if
Scale is the point
Tikal covers 142,000 acres (57,600 ha) with more than 3,000 structures and six monumental pyramid temples, a UNESCO mixed World Heritage Site since 1979 and a national park since 1955.
You want the tallest
La Danta at El Mirador reaches 72 m (236 ft) — two more than Tikal's Temple IV at 70 m (230 ft) — and by volume it is among the largest pyramids in the world. Reaching it means a 5 to 7 day expedition at $400 to $600, or air access with CONAP and IDAEH authorization.
And you want the sunrise
Entry from 4:00 a.m., with a mandatory guide and a Q100 surcharge on the Q150 foreign ticket. No commercial flight lands early enough — either you overnight in Flores or you charter.
With the honest caveat
morning fog in the Petén is common, and the sunrise is not guaranteed.
Pick Belize if
You want reef in the same trip
This is the decisive difference. No Belize airstrip is more than 35 minutes from another, and Altun Ha resolves in half a day with no particular physical demand — which leaves the afternoon for the reef.
With Caracol
— which is far and takes a full day — or Xunantunich — needing a ferry and 45 minutes of walking each way — that pairing does not work.
You want caves with archaeology
Actun Tunichil Muknal holds Maya remains in situ, rediscovered in 1989 and opened only in 1998 after nine years of study. Mandatory guide, limited groups, and cameras, phones and devices prohibited since 2012.
And you want a Maya port
Cerro Maya was the first Maya commercial centre built beside the sea, around 50 BC — every other site in the region is inland.
What both have
Living Maya communities.
In Guatemala, the highland communities, where a huipil is a woven identity document whose patterns identify the wearer's community of origin, made on a backstrap loom over months.
In Belize's Toledo, Mopan and Q'eqchi' cultures dominate the interior — inhabited communities with their own languages, agriculture and organization, distinct from archaeological sites without population.
Which means: in both countries, "Maya" is present tense.
The dates that matter
The Maya found Belize's interior around 300 to 600 AD, with the period of greatest intensity in the 700 to 900 AD range — coinciding with the greatest stress on the Maya lowland system.
Tikal's Hieroglyphic Stairway equivalent — Copán's, in Honduras — was completed by the fifteenth ruler in 755 AD, within that same window.
Or all three
Guatemala, Belize and Honduras hold the region's Maya sites, and Copán in Honduras is a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1980 with roughly 3,400 buildings identified, $15 entry and the longest known Maya hieroglyphic text.
A combined routing is geographically coherent — and from Palmerola, Roatán is 50 minutes, which puts Maya site in the morning, reef in the afternoon on the table there too.
Flight times
Guatemala, from La Aurora (GUA): Quetzaltenango 25 min · Retalhuleu 25 · Río Dulce 40 · Puerto Barrios 50 · Flores/Tikal 55
Belize, from Belize City (BZE): Caye Caulker 10 min · San Pedro 15 · Dangriga 15 · Placencia 25 · Punta Gorda 35
Planning Guatemala vs Belize Maya ruins
Resolve the fixed points first — permits, caps and any hard window — since those determine your dates rather than the other way around.
Then the season, which in this region decides more than the month suggests.
And keep a day of flexibility if the objective depends on weather, light or tide.

Frequently asked questions
Which country has the best Maya ruins?
Guatemala on scale — Tikal covers 142,000 acres with more than 3,000 structures. Belize on pairing, since Altun Ha resolves in half a day and leaves the afternoon for the reef.
Can you see Maya ruins and reef in one trip?
In Belize, in the same day. No airstrip is more than 35 minutes from another, and Altun Ha has no particular physical demand. With Caracol or ATM, that pairing does not work.
Is Tikal better than Caracol?
Tikal is larger and better known, with UNESCO status since 1979. Caracol is Belize's largest but far, consuming most of a day, which rules out combining it with anything else.
What is the tallest Maya pyramid?
La Danta at El Mirador, Guatemala, reaching 72 m — two more than Tikal's Temple IV. Reaching it means a 5 to 7 day expedition or air access with CONAP and IDAEH authorization.
Are there living Maya communities?
In both countries. Guatemala's highland communities, and Belize's Mopan and Q'eqchi' in Toledo — inhabited communities with their own languages, distinct from archaeological sites.
What about Honduras?
Copán has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1980, with roughly 3,400 buildings identified and the longest known Maya hieroglyphic text. From Palmerola, Roatán is 50 minutes.
