Four airstrips serve the Osa Peninsula from different angles, and which one you need depends on the park sector you reserved. Getting that wrong costs hours of ground transfer.
The four
Drake (DRK) — 155 km (96 mi) from San José: 30 minutes
Serves the San Pedrillo sector from the north of the peninsula.
Puerto Jiménez (PJM) — 191 km (119 mi): 40 minutes
The southern approach, and the gateway to La Leona and Carate.
Golfito (GLF) — 187 km (116 mi): 40 minutes
On the continental shore of Golfo Dulce, with the crossing to the peninsula.
Palmar Sur (PMZ) — the northern approach, also serving the Sierpe mangroves.
Confirm your sector before booking flights. It is not a detail.
The permit comes first
Daily cap: 200 people.
Certified guide mandatory.
Advance reservation required — and it should be resolved before you buy flights or book lodging, not after.
With a 200-person cap, the permit determines your dates, not the other way around.
The four ranger stations
Sirena, Los Patos, San Pedrillo and La Leona, linked by maintained trails.
Sirena is the one with lodging inside the park — and the only way to be inside the boundary during the dawn wildlife window.
One seasonal closure: the San Pedrillo–Sirena trail closes from 1 May to 1 December.
The timing problem the airstrip solves
Wildlife activity concentrates 5:30 to 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 to 6:00 p.m.
The park operates 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m
Anyone entering and leaving the same day misses both windows.
Two ways out
overnight at Sirena, or land before dawn and work the unregulated forest outside the boundary, then enter when the gate opens.
Both require arriving before first light
— which is what road travel from the Central Valley cannot deliver.
The road, for comparison
A full day from the Central Valley.
Approaches require 4WD and cross several rivers, and in the wet season river levels change what is passable.
Carate specifically requires 4WD.
Why Osa has this much wildlife
Two geological reasons
Age: the peninsula's relief is basalt 50 to 65 million years old, letting diversity accumulate without the interruptions younger terrain suffered.
And rain
4,000 to 5,000 mm (157–197 in) annually.
Old substrate plus abundant water: is what produces the density Corcovado is known for — and large mammals are what separate it from every other park in the country.
What each airstrip also opens
Drake — Caño Island, with a maximum of ten people simultaneously in the dive zone, all fishing prohibited, and advance booking before you buy flights. Plus two whale seasons, from populations of both hemispheres.
Puerto Jiménez and Golfito — Golfo Dulce, one of only four tropical fjords on Earth, with sheltered water inside and open Pacific outside. And a charter lets you land on one shore and depart from the other.
Palmar Sur — the Térraba-Sierpe mangroves, the largest on Costa Rica's Pacific, whose channels are only navigable on certain tide phases.
The day that covers both windows
05:00 — Depart San José 05:40 — Land at Puerto Jiménez 06:00 — Dawn window, outside the park boundary 08:00 — Corcovado entry with your guide 15:00 — Sector closes 16:00 — Afternoon window 18:30 — Departure
Both activity windows plus the park, in one day.
Before you book which airstrip for Corcovado
Reserve the park first
— 200-person cap, guide mandatory.
Confirm your sector
, since it determines the airstrip.
Check river crossing conditions: in the wet season.
Confirm whether the San Pedrillo–Sirena trail is open for your dates.
Repellent and rain gear, which at 4,000–5,000 mm are mandatory.
And binoculars — in closed forest much of what you perceive is auditory.
Fly with AeroRide
The peninsula's airstrips are 30 to 40 minutes from San José. Tell us your dates, your permit and your passenger count.
Quoted on request for the whole aircraft, round trip, up to five passengers. Final pricing depends on route, date and aircraft assigned.
Tell us which sector your permit is for. We will land you at the airstrip that serves it, before the gate opens.

Frequently asked questions
Which airstrip for Corcovado?
It depends on your reserved sector. Drake at 30 minutes serves San Pedrillo, Puerto Jiménez at 40 serves La Leona and Carate, Golfito at 40 gives the Golfo Dulce crossing, and Palmar Sur the northern approach.
Do you need 4WD for Corcovado?
For the road approaches, yes — several cross rivers, and Carate specifically requires it. In the wet season, river levels change what is passable.
How do you reach Sirena station?
Sirena is the station with lodging inside the park, reached via the maintained trail network. Note that the San Pedrillo–Sirena trail closes from 1 May to 1 December.
How far in advance should you book Corcovado?
Before you buy flights. With a 200-person daily cap and a mandatory guide, the permit determines your dates rather than the other way around.
Why does arrival time matter so much?
The park runs 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., while wildlife moves 5:30 to 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. Anyone entering and leaving the same day misses both windows.
Why does Osa have so much wildlife?
Relief of basalt 50 to 65 million years old, which let diversity accumulate uninterrupted, plus 4,000 to 5,000 mm of annual rainfall.
