Roatán takes direct international flights from several US cities. For the arrival itself, a charter adds nothing — and any operator telling you otherwise is selling you something you do not need.
Where it does earn its price is the hop.
Every route
| Option | Notes |
|---|---|
| Direct international flight | From several US cities — the standard route |
| Connection via San Pedro Sula | When the direct does not fit or costs too much |
| Ferry from La Ceiba | Sea crossing, weather dependent |
| Charter from Palmerola | 50 minutes — for connections and island hops |
Where a charter actually helps
The island hop. Roatán to Utila is roughly ten minutes by air, against most of a day by ferry and road. Add Guanaja and Cayos Cochinos, and the difference compounds.
The mainland connection. La Ceiba at 35 minutes from Palmerola, with Pico Bonito and the Río Cangrejal. Copán to the west. Tegucigalpa at 15 minutes.
And the dive schedule. You should not dive on your departure day — cabin pressure reduction after a dive can trigger decompression sickness. A charter lets you set the departure to your surface interval rather than fitting a fixed timetable.
The network
From Palmerola (XPL):
| Destination | Distance | Flight time |
|---|---|---|
| Tegucigalpa (TGU) | 56 km (35 mi) | 15 minutes |
| San Pedro Sula (SAP) | 123 km (76 mi) | 25 minutes |
| La Ceiba (LCE) | 172 km (107 mi) | 35 minutes |
| Utila (UII) | 208 km (129 mi) | 45 minutes |
| Roatán (RTB) | 245 km (152 mi) | 50 minutes |
What is on the island
Three western sectors, ten minutes apart: West Bay with the reef off the beach, West End walkable with varied dining, and Sandy Bay with the medical infrastructure.
Water taxi connects West End to West Bay in about 10 minutes, and the airport to West Bay runs about 30 minutes by car.
The east is undeveloped, with Camp Bay as the kitesurf zone — you need a vehicle there.
The one thing that makes sector choice matter
Roatán's only hyperbaric chamber is at Anthony's Key, in Sandy Bay.
A decompression incident on the east coast or at Camp Bay means crossing the island by road.
Before booking a dive centre, ask how long that transfer takes from your accommodation — and confirm your insurance covers diving and medical evacuation.
The reef
The Bay Islands sit on the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System, holding more than 90% of the marine species known in the Caribbean.
The Bay Islands National Marine Park extends 25 km (15 mi) from each island's coast, totaling roughly 650,000 hectares (1.6 million acres).
Water at 25 to 28 °C (77–82 °F) year round — the season is decided by visibility, not temperature.
And Honduras is one of the few countries where local reef health improves year over year, sustained by the Roatán Marine Park — an NGO formed in January 2005 by dive operators and local businesses. The park fee, around $10, funds that patrol.
The cruise ship calendar
Ships dock at Coxen Hole and Mahogany, and West Bay fills on those days.
Check the schedule when you plan, and use those days for the east end or for the hop to Utila.
A multi-island day
08:00 — Depart Roatán 08:15 — Land on Utila 09:30 — Whale shark snorkel — no fixed season here, unlike most destinations 14:00 — Return to Roatán 16:00 — West End for the evening
Two islands, one day. By ferry, that is an overnight.
One legal note: diving with whale sharks is prohibited in Utila — snorkel only, under guidelines approved by Honduras's National Congress in 2008, with three metres from the animal, four from the tail.
Before you book how to get to Roatán
Fly commercial if Roatán is your whole trip.
Ask about the chamber transfer from your accommodation.
Check the cruise ship calendar.
Reef-safe sunscreen.
And do not dive on your departure day.
Fly with AeroRide
Roatán is 50 minutes from Palmerola, Utila 45, and the islands are minutes from each other. Tell us your route, dates and passenger count.
Quoted on request for the whole aircraft, round trip, up to five passengers. Final pricing depends on route, date and aircraft assigned.
If you are building a multi-island trip, give us the full sequence. The hop is where the aircraft pays for itself — not the arrival.
