How it works

Flying private for the price of a ticket

The phrase appears in every advertisement in the sector. Sometimes it describes something real. This page explains under what conditions, and under which not.

It is the most repeated phrase in the sector and it deserves an honest examination, even written by the people selling the flights. Sometimes it describes something real. Most of the time it compares things that are not comparable.

The three conditions where it is true

1. With the group full. The whole aircraft is quoted. We show a "from" price per route; the final fare depends on the date, the group and the baggage, and is confirmed in writing before booking. With six people in a six-seat category, the per-seat cost falls into a range that on some routes approaches a scheduled ticket in high season.

Not on every route or every date. But it happens, and more often than people assume.

2. On an empty leg. The sector is already scheduled and its cost is covered. We work with empty legs: they arise from operations already confirmed, are listed at short notice and are not guaranteed. Ask us what is available that day. There the comparison with a scheduled ticket is direct and sometimes favourable.

With the known condition: the date and the route come from the operation, not from you.

3. Against a poor alternative. If the scheduled flight to your destination requires a connection, an overnight, or simply does not exist — Corn Island is 182.4 nautical miles from Managua, Drake Bay 83.5 from San José over a road that gets difficult in the green season — the comparison stops being ticket against ticket.

It becomes ticket plus hotel night plus half a day lost, against a direct flight. And then the figures look considerably closer.

Where the phrase becomes misleading

When it compares a seat with an aircraft. A scheduled ticket is one seat. A charter is the aeroplane. Saying "the same price" without saying how many travel is the sector's most common trick, and it works because nobody reads the small print of a headline.

When it omits the whole chain. The cheap ticket stops being cheap once it requires a transfer to the main airport, checked baggage charged separately and two hours of check-in per person. None of those three appears in the advertised price, and all three get paid.

And when the destination is well connected. San José to Tamarindo is 97.1 nautical miles and there are scheduled options that work. Where scheduled service exists to a destination, its frequencies and times are set by the airline, not by us.

There the phrase does not hold at all, and anyone repeating it to you is selling rather than informing.

How to make the comparison properly

Four steps and it resolves:

  1. Add up every ticket for your group, not one.
  2. Add checked baggage, if you carry boards or gear.
  3. Add the transfers to the airports at both ends.
  4. And value the time, if you are travelling for work.

With that figure in front of you the comparison is real and decides itself. Without it, either option can look like the good one.

What we will tell you

If your case meets none of the three conditions, we will say so before quoting. The specific aircraft is assigned on confirmation, based on passenger count, baggage and the destination field.

And if it does, we will give you the whole sum rather than the headline. A client who books believing a slogan and then runs the numbers is a client who does not come back.

Frequently asked questions

Is that phrase true?

Sometimes. With a full group, on an empty leg, or against a poor alternative. Otherwise it compares different things.

What is the most common trick?

Comparing one seat with a whole aircraft without saying how many people travel.

What gets omitted in the comparison?

The transfer to the airports, checked baggage, and check-in hours per passenger.

When does it not hold?

When the destination is well connected. San José to Tamarindo is 97.1 nautical miles with scheduled options.

How do I compare properly?

Add every ticket for the group, the baggage, the transfers at both ends, and the value of the time.

Will you warn me if it does not pay?

Yes, before quoting. Someone who books on a slogan and then runs the numbers does not come back.
