In the Bay Islands the ground transfer is almost never the problem. Roatán has roads, the resorts sit minutes from the airport and many of them collect.
What orders the trip here is something else, and it has nothing to do with the road or the aircraft.
Roatán: the easy part
The airport is 96.1 nautical miles from San Pedro Sula and takes international flights. West Bay, West End and most of the resorts are a short drive away.
Almost all resorts include collection or arrange it on notice. It is not in our fare, but at this destination it is rarely an issue. Ground transfer is not included in the fare: your accommodation or a local operator arranges it.
If your trip starts and ends on Roatán, the planning is among the simplest in the catalogue.
What does order the trip: the diving
Here is the factor that decides the whole itinerary, and it has to be raised at booking rather than at the end.
An interval must pass between the last dive and flying. The interval between your last dive and the flight is the one your dive centre specifies.
That means your return flight time is decided by your last dive, not the other way round. With scheduled flights the departures are what they are: either they fit that interval or you lose the last day's diving.
And that day is the most expensive one to lose, because it is already paid for at the dive centre. On a week of diving it is a full day out of seven.
On a private flight you set the hour. That is the real argument for these islands, and it has nothing to do with the aircraft or the transfer.
It is why the first thing we ask when quoting a dive trip is not how many of you there are, but what time you plan to come out of the water on the last day.
Utila: the different case
24.0 nautical miles from Roatán, and there everything changes.
Utila is the worst connected of the three: a small field that limits the aircraft, a ferry from La Ceiba on a fixed timetable that does not wait, and thin scheduled frequencies that fill early in season.
With a large group or bulky gear, the way in is usually Roatán and then the sea leg. One large flight to Roatán plus the local hop normally works out better than two small direct flights. The specific aircraft is assigned on confirmation, based on passenger count, baggage and the destination field.
What to know about the small fields
Not every Caribbean field has fuel or handling at any hour, and that shapes the rotation and sometimes the times available. Ground services at these fields are limited and vary by aerodrome and by hour.
And Caribbean weather costs more lost days than the dry Pacific. Put the margin on the return day, not the outbound.
What to tell us
Which island exactly, not "the Bay Islands".
The planned time of your last dive, which is what fixes the return flight.
And whether your resort collects at the airport, so the transfer is not arranged and paid for twice.
Frequently asked questions
Is the transfer complicated on Roatán?
No. There are roads, the resorts sit near the airport and almost all of them collect or arrange it.
What orders the trip then?
The interval between the last dive and flying. It fixes the return time, not the other way round. The interval between your last dive and the flight is the one your dive centre specifies.
What happens with scheduled flights?
The departures are what they are. Either they fit your interval or you lose the last day's diving, already paid for.
And for Utila?
24.0 nautical miles from Roatán. With a large group it usually works out better to come in via Roatán and continue by sea.
Is there fuel at every field?
No. Caribbean services are limited and vary by field. Ground services at these fields are limited and vary by aerodrome and by hour.
What should I tell you when enquiring?
Which island exactly, the planned time of your last dive, and whether your resort collects at the airport.
Where do I leave the weather margin?
On the return day. A delayed outbound flight can cost the intercontinental.
