Choosing which Belize caye to visit starts with the barrier reef — the largest reef system in the Northern Hemisphere, and the cayes are scattered across it and across the lagoon behind it. Picking the right one matters — though with no airstrip more than 35 minutes from another, you may not have to pick only one.
The geography that shapes the choice
The barrier runs parallel to the coast, with a shallow lagoon between it and the mainland.
Cayes sit on both: barrier cayes with direct access to the outer reef, and lagoon cayes, sheltered, with flats.
That distinction determines what you can do from where.
All five, side by side
| Caye | Flight from Belize City | Character | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Caye Caulker (CYC) | 10 min · 36 km (22 mi) | Smallest, least developed | Quiet, low budget |
| Ambergris (SPR) | 15 min · 55 km (34 mi) | Largest island, most services | Reef access, variety |
| Dangriga (DGA) | 15 min · 62 km (39 mi) | Mainland gateway | Reef plus rainforest |
| Placencia (PLJ) | 25 min · 112 km (70 mi) | Southern reef | Whale sharks, lagoon backup |
| Punta Gorda (PND) | 35 min · 168 km (104 mi) | Far south | Garifuna culture, cacao |
What each actually gives you
Ambergris: is the country's largest island, with San Pedro as its centre and the greatest concentration of services on the cayes. It gives access to Hol Chan — a 23 m (75 ft) channel through the barrier, $5 entry — and Shark Ray Alley, about 6.4 km (4 mi) south of San Pedro.
Caye Caulker: is the closest to the capital and the least developed.
Placencia: opens the southern reef, the southern cayes and Gladden Spit, where whale shark presence tracks snapper spawning and lunar phase.
Dangriga reaches the central cayes and Cockscomb Basin, with roughly 200 jaguars across 128,000 acres.
Punta Gorda is the far south, with the Toledo cacao zone and hundreds of smallholder growers.
Placencia's hidden advantage
Worth knowing before you choose.
Placencia's lagoon stays navigable when the sea does not allow going out to the outer reef.
Which means a cancellation for sea state does not empty the day — the activity moves to sheltered water.
That makes Placencia a reliable base, not just a fair-weather one.
And the question to ask any operator there: is there a lagoon alternative when the sea cancels? That distinguishes someone who knows the destination from someone selling only the good-weather trip.
Moving between them
Habited cayes have boat connections, and water transfer is routine.
What to verify: life jackets for every participant, current permits, the specific route and duration, and cancellation criteria for sea state.
On anchoring: only where permitted. In a reef system, an anchor on coral does direct damage.
The four-day circuit
Day 1 — Ambergris: Hol Chan and Shark Ray Alley Day 2 — Fly to Dangriga, 15 minutes: Cockscomb Basin Day 3 — Fly to Placencia, 25 minutes: Gladden Spit Day 4 — Return to Belize City
Northern reef, rainforest and southern reef in four days, with three hops under thirty minutes.
The Blue Hole, from any of them
318 m (1,043 ft) across, 124 m (407 ft) deep, on Lighthouse Reef atoll, roughly 70 km (43 mi) from Belize City.
Its stalactites sit at 40 m (131 ft) — beyond recreational freediving, whatever you may see advertised.
And the scenic flight wants high sun, not the low light that flatters most aerial photography.
Before you book which Belize caye to choose
Long-sleeve rash guard for snorkeling — the back is exposed continuously.
Reef-safe sunscreen.
Reef booties for shore entries.
And do not dive on your departure day if diving is on the plan.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best island in Belize?
It depends on the trip. Ambergris for services and reef access, Caye Caulker for quiet, Placencia for the southern reef and whale sharks, Dangriga to combine reef with rainforest, Punta Gorda for Garifuna culture and cacao.
How far apart are the Belize cayes?
From Belize City: 10 minutes to Caye Caulker, 15 to Ambergris and Dangriga, 25 to Placencia and 35 to Punta Gorda. No airstrip is more than 35 minutes from another.
Can you visit multiple Belize cayes?
Yes, and it is what the network allows: northern reef, rainforest and southern reef in four days with three short hops.
What happens if the sea is too rough?
At Placencia, the lagoon stays navigable when the outer reef does not. Ask any operator whether they have a lagoon alternative — that is what distinguishes someone who knows the destination.
What is Hol Chan?
A natural channel through the barrier reef, 23 meters wide, with $5 entry. Tide moving through it funnels marine life past a single point.
Is Belize's reef protected?
Yes. The Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System was inscribed by UNESCO in 1996, and the barrier is the largest reef system in the Northern Hemisphere.
