Roatán is among the best-connected destinations in the catalogue: it has an international airport, scheduled flights and a ferry from La Ceiba. Charter is not the default option, and we are not going to pretend it is.
The three ways in
| Route | Comment |
|---|---|
| Direct international flight | Flights arrive at Roatán from abroad. If one suits, that is the answer. |
| Scheduled from San Pedro Sula or La Ceiba | 96.1 and 39.4 NM. Frequent and cheap. |
| Ferry from La Ceiba | Cheap, fixed timetable, and a crossing that can be rough. |
With those three options, charter has to justify itself. Here are the three cases where it does.
1. The other two islands
Roatán is well connected. Utila and Guanaja are not.
Utila is 24.0 nautical miles from Roatán, and there the comparison is not with a scheduled flight but with a sea crossing on its own timetable that also shapes the rest of the day.
Guanaja is the extreme case: small field, scarce service, and getting there depends on fitting two links together.
If your trip includes more than one Bay Island, charter stops being a luxury and becomes what makes the itinerary possible.
Roatán and Guanaja are a short hop apart in the air; by sea each move is half a day.
2. The dive interval
This is the case almost nobody anticipates, and the most important on the page.
Roatán, Utila and Guanaja are diving destinations. And between your last dive and flying, an interval has to pass. The interval between your last dive and the flight is the one your dive centre specifies.
On a scheduled flight the departure time is what it is: either it fits your interval or you lose a day's diving. On charter you set the hour — which can mean diving on the morning of the last day rather than losing it.
On a week-long dive trip, that is a whole day of difference.
3. The group with gear
Full dive equipment for six people is not a weight problem, it is a volume problem, and scheduled allowances are strict.
Divide the charter fare among the passengers and add what you would pay in excess baggage. With six divers the sums usually change sign. We show a "from" price per route; the final fare depends on the date, the group and the baggage, and is confirmed in writing before booking.
And there is a second effect: the group arrives together, rather than split across two departures hours apart.
With the usual honest caveat: at Utila and Guanaja volume also limits the aircraft, sometimes more than on the scheduled service. The specific aircraft is assigned on confirmation, based on passenger count, baggage and the destination field.
When not to charter
If you are going to Roatán and only Roatán, on normal dates and without diving on the last day: scheduled or the direct international flight are better and cheaper.
And if the ferry suits you, it is the economical option and it works. Just bear in mind that it runs to a fixed timetable and that the crossing depends on the sea. We confirm the applicable ferry timetable in the quote, because it changes with the date and the operation.
Frequently asked questions
Is charter worth it to Roatán?
Only in three cases: combining several islands, diving on the last day, or travelling as a group with gear.
Why does diving change the calculation?
Because an interval has to pass between the last dive and flying. On charter you set the hour. The interval between your last dive and the flight is the one your dive centre specifies.
How do I reach Utila or Guanaja?
Utila is 24.0 nautical miles from Roatán. By sea there is a crossing on its own timetable that shapes the day.
And the ferry from La Ceiba?
It is cheap and it works. Fixed timetable and a crossing that depends on the sea. We confirm the applicable ferry timetable in the quote, because it changes with the date and the operation.
From how many people does it pay?
With six divers and their gear the sums usually change sign against excess baggage.
What if I am only going to Roatán?
Scheduled or the direct international flight are better and cheaper. We say it plainly.
