This page does not give you a figure: it explains what yours depends on. And the first thing to say is that in Costa Rica distance matters less than almost everyone assumes. From 895 USD per aircraft.
The whole country fits in a hundred nautical miles
| Destination | Distance |
|---|---|
| Quepos / Manuel Antonio | 33.4 NM |
| La Fortuna / Arenal | 36.1 NM |
| Tambor / Santa Teresa | 50.2 NM |
| Tortuguero | 53.4 NM |
| Drake Bay | 83.5 NM |
| Nosara | 85.6 NM |
| Liberia | 86.9 NM |
| Tamarindo | 97.1 NM |
From nearest to furthest there is less than sixty-four nautical miles of difference. In a catalogue that reaches one thousand four hundred and eighty-one in the Caribbean, the whole of Costa Rica is a narrow band.
The direct consequence: distance is not what separates one fare from another. There are three times more kilometres between Quepos and Tamarindo, but not three times the price.
What does move the budget
The assigned aircraft. It is the main factor, and the destination decides it, not the origin. Drake Bay imposes 750 metres by 11 wide; Quepos and Liberia impose nothing. The same group may need different categories depending on where they are going. The specific aircraft is assigned on confirmation, based on passenger count, baggage and the destination field.
Baggage. Surfboards, dive kit or fishing gear are what most often force a step up in category without the client expecting it. Say so in the first message.
The operating minimum. There is a threshold below which no sector costs less. On short routes — Quepos at 33.4 nautical miles — that means the price does not drop proportionally with the distance.
Which airport: Juan Santamaría or Tobías Bolaños
San José has two, and they are 4.4 nautical miles apart.
Juan Santamaría (SJO) is the international. Its advantage is the connection: if you arrive on a long-haul flight and continue the same day, departing from there avoids a transfer with luggage.
Tobías Bolaños (SYQ) is the general-aviation field, closer to the city centre.
In the air the difference is negligible for any destination in the country. The choice is ground logistics, and it depends on where you are that morning. The aircraft may need to reposition to the departure aerodrome, and that leg forms part of the quote.
When flying does not earn its place
We say it on every route page and we summarise it here.
To Liberia (86.9 NM) there is a main highway and scheduled flights. It is the route we recommend least in the Costa Rican catalogue.
To La Fortuna (36.1 NM) and Quepos (33.4 NM) there is a reasonable road, and on such short sectors the transfer to each aerodrome eats much of the advantage.
Where flying changes the day is towards Drake Bay, Tortuguero and southern Nicoya: destinations that cost a full day overland, or that have no road at all.
The question asked earlier
If your destination is in Guanacaste and you have not booked the long-haul yet, enter through Liberia. Nosara is 37.6 nautical miles from there against 85.6 from here; Tamarindo, 23.2 against 97.1.
No charter optimisation makes up for a poor choice of entry airport.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a private charter from San José cost?
It is quoted per whole aircraft, not per passenger. Distance matters less than you would think: all of Costa Rica fits within a hundred nautical miles of here.
What pushes the budget up most?
The assigned aircraft, decided by the destination rather than the origin, and baggage. Boards and dive kit most often force a step up. The specific aircraft is assigned on confirmation, based on passenger count, baggage and the destination field.
Does the price drop on short routes?
Not proportionally. There is an operating minimum below which no sector costs less.
Juan Santamaría or Tobías Bolaños?
They are 4.4 nautical miles apart. The choice is ground logistics: the international if you connect from long-haul, the other if you are already in the city. The aircraft may need to reposition to the departure aerodrome, and that leg forms part of the quote.
Which destinations are not worth flying to?
Liberia has a highway and scheduled flights. La Fortuna and Quepos have reasonable roads and very short sectors.
And which ones are?
Drake Bay, Tortuguero and southern Nicoya: destinations that cost a full day overland or have no road.
