Let us start with something unusual for a pricing page: you almost certainly do not need this flight. This page explains why, and in which three cases the answer changes. On request per aircraft.
The shortest sectors in the catalogue
| Origin | Distance |
|---|---|
| San Pedro, Ambergris (SPR) | 11.3 NM |
| Belize Municipal (TZA) | 16.0 NM |
| Goldson International (BZE) | 19.6 NM |
Eleven point three nautical miles is the shortest sector in Central America in our entire catalogue. Twenty-one kilometres.
Over distances like that, time in the air stops being the factor. The whole clock goes to the transfers to each aerodrome and the coordination, which run longer than the flight itself.
And there is a water taxi
Regular, frequent and considerably cheaper, from Belize City and from San Pedro alike.
If your plan is a few days on the caye, with a flexible schedule and normal baggage, take the boat. We say it on the pricing page, before the fare, because it is what we would do.
The specific aircraft is assigned on confirmation, based on passenger count, baggage and the destination field.
The three cases where it does pay
Rough seas. The water taxi depends on conditions that give no notice. In a swell, twenty-one kilometres in a launch stop being comfortable, and for some passengers stop being viable.
Awkward baggage. Heavy dive kit or board bags complicate boarding a boat more than boarding an aeroplane.
Chaining with a long flight. If you arrive from Miami or Flores and continue the same day, keeping the aircraft avoids two transfers with luggage. It is the one case where the short flight pays for itself.
The gap between airports is enormous in proportion
Here Caye Caulker shows something visible only on very short sectors.
From the municipal it is 16.0 nautical miles; from the international, 19.6. Three point six of difference on a sixteen-mile sector: almost a quarter of the journey.
On a two-hundred-mile route, three and a half mean nothing. Here they do. The shorter the sector, the more the departure airport weighs — and it is why at this destination we always ask where you are starting from. The aircraft may need to reposition to the departure aerodrome, and that leg forms part of the quote.
The runway is rebuilt, and that is no longer a factor
A fact that corrects old information: in 2017 Maya Island Air and Tropic Air suspended service over the dangerous state of the runway. It was then rebuilt with asphalt and lighting.
References still describing it as dangerous are out of date. And the lighting is a genuine exception in a catalogue where almost every small field operates in daylight only — though whether that widens our operating window depends on authorisation and procedure. We confirm the field’s operating window in the quote, because it changes with the date and the operation.
What makes up the price, if you fly anyway
The flight, per whole aircraft. Over eleven nautical miles the price does not drop proportionally: there is an operating minimum below which no sector costs less.
The aircraft, decided by your group and baggage, not by the distance.
The ground transfers, at both ends, which we do not operate and which on this sector account for most of the time.
Frequently asked questions
Is flying to Caye Caulker worth it?
Almost never. There is a regular, frequent, cheaper water taxi, and the transfers to each aerodrome run longer than the flight.
What is the shortest sector?
From San Pedro, 11.3 nautical miles: the shortest sector in Central America in our entire catalogue.
When does it pay?
In rough seas, with awkward baggage, or chaining with a long flight the same day to avoid two transfers.
Does the Belize City airport matter?
A great deal, in proportion: 16.0 nautical miles from the municipal against 19.6 from the international, almost a quarter of the journey. The aircraft may need to reposition to the departure aerodrome, and that leg forms part of the quote.
Is the runway safe?
Yes. It was rebuilt after the 2017 suspension, with asphalt and lighting. References saying otherwise are out of date.
Does the price drop because it is so short?
Not proportionally. There is an operating minimum below which no sector costs less.
