Caye Caulker

A narrow island with sand streets, no cars and the reef offshore, twenty minutes by air from Belize City. What the island is like, what 'go slow' really means.

Caye Caulker is the small island that sits between Belize City and Ambergris Caye, and it has built its whole identity on being the opposite of its bigger neighbour. Sand streets, no cars, a village you can walk end to end, and the barrier reef just offshore. The unofficial motto painted on signs around the island is "go slow," and it is less a slogan than a description.

What it actually is

A narrow island with one village at its southern half, and mangrove and undeveloped land to the north.

There are no private cars. People walk, cycle or use the few golf carts that serve as taxis, and most places in the village are a few minutes apart on foot.

The Split is a channel at the northern edge of the village, the island's social centre in the afternoon, where people swim, sit on the dock and watch the sunset.

Why people choose it

The pace. A day here can be a snorkel trip in the morning and nothing at all in the afternoon, and that is the point.

The reef. Snorkel and dive boats leave the village every morning for the reef and the marine reserve sites near Ambergris's southern tip.

The cost. Accommodation and food are generally simpler and less expensive than on Ambergris, which makes the island popular with independent travellers.

Why some people don't

It is small. Two or three days cover it for most visitors, and anyone wanting a range of restaurants and activities will find more on Ambergris.

It is simple. Most accommodation is guesthouses and small hotels rather than resorts.

And, like Ambergris, much of the shoreline is seagrass rather than swimming beach. The Split and the docks are where people swim.

Caye Caulker or Ambergris

Choose Caulker for slow and simple; choose Ambergris for choice and comfort. They are 11.3 nautical miles apart, and many visitors do both: a few days on each, linked by a short water taxi or flight.

Getting there

By air, it is the shortest hop in Belize. The Caye Caulker airstrip (CUK), at the southern end of the island, is 19.6 nautical miles from the international airport and 16.0 from the municipal airport in Belize City. Scheduled island flights stop here. We show a "from" price per route; the final fare depends on the date, the group and the baggage, and is confirmed in writing before booking.

By water taxi, it is under an hour from Belize City, and it is how most visitors arrive.

A private flight makes sense when an international arrival does not fit the boat schedule, for groups with luggage, or to link the island with Placencia (74.4 nautical miles) or the mainland jungle the same day.

Practical notes

Bring cash. Card acceptance is improving but uneven in smaller places.

Pack light. Luggage is carried on foot or by cart through sand streets.

And keep valuables close: petty theft is the practical concern, as on any busy island. Check your own government's current advisory before planning. We check travel advisories before confirming each route and tell you if they change.

When to go

We fly year-round. In the rainy season the pilot in command decides; if weather stops a flight, it is rescheduled at no cost. The drier months run roughly from February to May, with the calmest water for snorkel trips.

June to November is the wetter period and hurricane season, when weather can cancel boat trips for a day or two.
