Limón is the Costa Rican Caribbean destination where the flight has to be justified, and we would rather do that before quoting. From 1,195 USD per aircraft.
Here there is a road
Everywhere else on this seaboard — Tortuguero, Barra del Colorado — the flight does not compete with a route: it competes with a chain of road and boat.
Limón is the exception. There is tarmac from the Central Valley on highway 32, about three and a half hours depending on the stretch.
That means there is a certain cost on the other side. With open dates and a small group, the road works, and we have no problem saying so.
It is the only Caribbean destination we can say that about. At the others there is no alternative to compare.
The flight justifies itself when the schedule cannot carry the risk of the Braulio Carrillo pass, which closes with landslides and backs up in rain. Three and a half hours is the normal case; the risk is not in the duration but in its spread.
The five categories
| Aircraft | PAX | From SJO | From Pavas |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cessna 206 | 1–4 | 1,295 USD | 1,250 USD |
| Piper Seneca | 1–5 | 1,795 USD | 1,695 USD |
| Piper Navajo | 1–6 | 2,295 USD | 2,195 USD |
| Cessna Caravan | 1–12 | 3,995 USD | 3,795 USD |
| King Air | 1–7 | 3,895 USD | 3,695 USD |
The price is per aircraft. Pavas is 3.9 nautical miles closer to Limón than Juan Santamaría, but over seventy miles that is little more than five per cent.
The specific aircraft is assigned on confirmation, based on passenger count, baggage and the destination field.
And here the runway limits nothing
Eighteen hundred metres by thirty, and international airport status. It is one of the few destinations in the catalogue with no aircraft restriction at all. The specific aircraft is assigned on confirmation, based on passenger count, baggage and the destination field.
That has a practical consequence for the price: with a large group everyone fits in one aeroplane, without splitting flights or stepping up a category because of runway limits.
At destinations like Drake Bay or Punta Islita that is not possible. Here it is, and in a group of ten or twelve the difference is considerable: two small flights almost always cost more than one large one, besides arriving at different times.
What it opens, and what is not included
Limón is the air gateway to the southern Caribbean: Cahuita, Puerto Viejo, Manzanillo and Gandoca, along the coast road. That transfer is not included.
To the north, Tortuguero is 46.8 nautical miles away and Barra del Colorado 59.0 — the two destinations with no road. If your trip combines both halves of the seaboard, ask for the whole run: it usually prices better together.
And Bocas del Toro is 58.8 nautical miles away, but that flight crosses a border and carries deadlines of its own that do not depend on distance.
Frequently asked questions
Is it worth flying to Limón?
It is the Caribbean exception: there is a paved road, about three and a half hours. The flight justifies itself if the schedule cannot carry the Braulio Carrillo risk.
Is the price to private charter to Limón per person?
No, for the whole aircraft. We show a "from" price per route; the final fare depends on the date, the group and the baggage, and is confirmed in writing before booking.
Does the runway at private charter to Limón limit the aircraft?
No. Eighteen hundred metres by thirty and international status: the whole group fits in one aircraft. The specific aircraft is assigned on confirmation, based on passenger count, baggage and the destination field.
Does it work for Puerto Viejo and Cahuita?
Yes, along the coast road. That transfer is not included in the fare.
And if I continue to Tortuguero?
It is 46.8 nautical miles. If you combine both halves of the seaboard, ask for the whole run priced together.
Can I continue to Bocas del Toro?
It is 58.8 nautical miles, but it crosses a border and carries deadlines of its own.
