Entry Requirements for Honduras

A four-country agreement that treats your days as shared, and a visa-free stay that may be shorter than you think. What gets checked, and what to confirm.

Entry to Honduras is straightforward for most visitors, and there is one rule that surprises people often enough to lead with it. Honduras belongs to the CA-4, a shared movement area with Guatemala, El Salvador and Nicaragua, which means your days in one count against all four.

Rules change, and they change faster than any article. Confirm the current position with the Honduran authorities or your airline before you rely on it. We do not advise on visas; we do tell you the formalities at each end of the flight.

The CA-4, explained

The four countries operate a common area for tourist stays. Moving between them does not reset your clock, and the permitted period applies across the group rather than per country.

Why this catches people: a traveller doing Guatemala, then Honduras, then Nicaragua assumes each border grants a fresh allowance. It does not, and the shortfall is discovered on the way out.

Extensions exist and are handled by immigration rather than at a border, and the process is worth starting before you need it rather than after.

What actually gets checked

A passport with enough validity. The common requirement is six months beyond entry, and airlines enforce it whatever the border does.

Onward travel. This is checked by airlines at the departure gate more often than by immigration at arrival, and being unable to show it is a problem before you leave rather than after you land.

And where you are staying, occasionally, which the first night's booking answers.

Arrival, in practice

San Pedro Sula is the busier gateway and the one for the islands and Copán: 96,1 nautical miles from Roatán and 64,3 from La Ceiba.

Tegucigalpa is 93,0 nautical miles further inland and serves the capital and the south.

Roatán has its own international field, which means visitors on some international services clear directly on the island without touching the mainland. If that applies to your routing, it removes a transfer and a day.

Flying onward the same day

If you are connecting to an island, the question is whether the clearance and the onward sector fit before the field closes.

Several regional strips are daylight-only, which constrains a late arrival more than people expect, and a late international landing at San Pedro Sula does not reliably reach the islands by road and ferry. We show a "from" price per route; the final fare depends on the date, the group and the baggage, and is confirmed in writing before booking.

Ask about the specific fields on your routing rather than about Honduras in general. The answer differs between Roatán, Utila and Guanaja.

Things that are not entry requirements but get asked about

Vaccination. Requirements depend on where you are arriving from rather than on Honduras itself, and the yellow fever question only arises for travellers coming from certain countries. Check with a travel health service rather than a travel article.

Cash. The lempira is the currency and US dollars are widely accepted on the islands, which is less true inland.

And travel advisories, which are not entry requirements at all but do affect insurance validity in some policies. Read yours. We check travel advisories before confirming each route and tell you if they change.

Leaving

There may be departure charges depending on your ticket and routing, sometimes included and sometimes not, and this is worth clarifying when you book rather than at the counter.

And the CA-4 clock applies at exit, which is where an overstay surfaces. If your regional trip is long, count the days across all four countries before you arrive at the airport.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a visa for Honduras?

Most visitors do not, but rules change — confirm with the Honduran authorities or your airline before relying on it.

What is the CA-4?

A shared movement area with Guatemala, El Salvador and Nicaragua. Days in one country count against all four; crossing a border does not reset the clock.

What gets checked on arrival?

Passport validity, onward travel — usually by the airline at departure rather than at the border — and occasionally your first night's address.

Can I clear customs on Roatán?

Roatán has its own international field, so some international routings clear on the island without touching the mainland.

Can I reach the islands the day I land?

By air usually, by road and ferry not reliably after a late arrival. Several regional strips are daylight-only — ask about your specific fields.

Where do overstays surface?

At exit. Count your days across all four CA-4 countries before you get to the airport.
