Copán sits in western Honduras, right against the Guatemalan border. That position is why it appears on itineraries from both countries — and the route you pick changes the shape of the whole trip.
Every route
| From | How | Time | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| San Pedro Sula | Road | ~3 h | The usual Honduran gateway |
| Guatemala City | Road via border | Most of a day | Border crossing included |
| Antigua | Road via border | Full day | Common on Guatemalan circuits |
| Palmerola | Air, then road | 25 min to SAP | Pairs with the Bay Islands same day |
The Honduran route
San Pedro Sula is the standard gateway, and it is 25 minutes from Palmerola (XPL) by air.
From there, road to the site.
Which makes Copán reachable from the network base without a dedicated trip — and that matters for what comes next.
The Guatemalan route
Its border position makes Copán reachable from that side, which is why Guatemalan operators sell it.
What it involves: a land border crossing, and most of a day from Guatemala City or Antigua.
Confirm current border requirements before fixing dates, since they change.
The pairing that only works by air
This is the argument for flying rather than driving.
Copán lies west. The Bay Islands lie north.
From Palmerola (XPL):
| Destination | Distance | Flight time |
|---|---|---|
| Tegucigalpa (TGU) | 56 km (35 mi) | 15 minutes |
| San Pedro Sula (SAP) | 123 km (76 mi) | 25 minutes |
| La Ceiba (LCE) | 172 km (107 mi) | 35 minutes |
| Utila (UII) | 208 km (129 mi) | 45 minutes |
| Roatán (RTB) | 245 km (152 mi) | 50 minutes |
Maya site in the morning, Caribbean reef in the afternoon. By road, those are two separate trips with a day of transfer between them.
A day that connects both ends
06:30 — Fly west 08:00 — Copán at opening, before the heat and the groups 13:00 — Return 15:00 — Fly to the north coast 16:30 — Bay Islands
What to sort before you travel
The site opens 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., and arriving at opening is worth it.
Entry is $15, with tunnels paid separately, a guide required only underground, and groups of 10 maximum there.
The site itself — the Hieroglyphic Stairway, Altar Q and what the tunnels show — is covered in the Copán article. This page is about reaching it.
How to get to Copán from the air
The whole valley, with the roughly 3,400 identified structures spread across it.
And with low-angle light, unexcavated mounds under the vegetation — regular swellings that mark buildings nobody has dug. A Maya structure covered in jungle is still an elevation, and the canopy hides the stone, not the relief.
Which gives the overflight an obligatory hour. With overhead sun the forest flattens and the mounds vanish.
Before you book
Confirm border requirements if arriving from Guatemala.
Sturdy shoes, sun protection and a hat — Maya sites offer very little shade.
Plenty of water.
And decide whether the Bay Islands are on the trip, because that decides the routing.
Which gateway suits your trip
Coming from Honduras: San Pedro Sula, with the Bay Islands reachable the same week.
Coming from Guatemala: the border route, which fits an Antigua–Copán circuit.
And the deciding question: is Copán the trip, or part of it? If it is part of one, the Honduran side opens the reef. If it is the trip, either gateway works.
What to confirm with your operator
The road transfer time from San Pedro Sula, since it is not included in the flight.
Whether the Bay Islands leg is on the same booking, which determines the routing.
And border requirements if any part of the trip crosses from Guatemala, since they change.

Frequently asked questions
How do you get to Copán from San Pedro Sula?
By road, taking around three hours. San Pedro Sula is itself 25 minutes from Palmerola by air, which makes it the standard Honduran gateway.
Can you reach Copán from Guatemala?
Yes — its position against the border makes it reachable from that side, which is why Guatemalan operators sell it. It involves a land border crossing and most of a day from Guatemala City or Antigua.
Can you visit Copán and the Bay Islands in one trip?
Yes. From Palmerola, Roatán is 50 minutes and Utila 45 — Maya site in the morning, reef in the afternoon. By road those are two separate trips.
What time should you arrive at the site?
At opening, 6:00 a.m., before the heat and the groups. It runs until 6:00 p.m.
Is a guide required?
Only in the tunnels, which are paid separately and admit a maximum of 10 people at a time. On the main circuit, no.
When should you fly over the valley?
Early or late. Low-angle light reveals unexcavated mounds under the vegetation; with overhead sun the forest flattens and they vanish.
