Almost every short trip to El Salvador stays west of the capital, and it misses the east entirely. The eastern region holds the country's most important historical sites, its largest mangrove bay, its quietest surf and a gulf shared with Honduras and Nicaragua — and it needs time that a long weekend cannot give.
What is actually there
Perquín and the mountains of Morazán, in the north-east, cool and green, where the country's civil war was fought most intensely and where its history is told most directly.
San Miguel, the region's main city, beneath the active Chaparrastique volcano.
The Bay of Jiquilisco, a large mangrove bay protected as a biosphere reserve, with island beaches and one of the region's most important sea turtle nesting areas.
The eastern beaches, around El Cuco and Las Flores, quieter than La Libertad, with high-quality waves.
And the Gulf of Fonseca, where islands off the port of La Unión look across the water at Honduras and Nicaragua.
The history, and how to visit it
Perquín's museum of the civil war tells the conflict from the perspective of those who fought in these mountains, in the places where it happened.
El Mozote, nearby, is a memorial to the civilians killed there in 1981, one of the gravest atrocities of the war. It is a place of remembrance, and it asks for a quiet, respectful visit.
We take no political position on the conflict. We mention these sites because they are central to understanding the country, and because visitors who go consistently describe them as the most important thing they saw.
Who it suits
Anyone genuinely interested in the country's history, which is nowhere more present than here.
Surfers looking for empty points, around Las Flores.
Birders and turtle watchers, at Jiquilisco. Park fees and permits are not included in the flight.
And travellers with ten days or more, for whom the east becomes the best part of the trip.
Who it does not suit
Anyone on a short trip. The east is three hours or more by road from the capital and the coast, and three or four days cannot give it the time.
And anyone expecting the tourist infrastructure of the west. Hotels here are fewer and simpler.
Getting there
It is a road trip. The drive from San Salvador to San Miguel and beyond takes three hours or more, and the mountain roads to Perquín are slower still.
There is no airstrip we can plan with in the region, and we would rather say so than imply one. Private flights leave from Ilopango, 16,0 nautical miles from the international airport, for regional sectors. We show a "from" price per route; the final fare depends on the date, the group and the baggage, and is confirmed in writing before booking.
The east is also the natural overland gateway to Honduras and Nicaragua. For flying, Tegucigalpa is 113,5 nautical miles from the international airport and Managua 186,2.
The Gulf of Fonseca, practically
Boats cross the gulf between the three countries, and it is tempting to use them as a shortcut.
Use official crossings with proper immigration processing only, and confirm the current rules before relying on a boat: an irregular entry is a serious problem anywhere, and more so under current conditions. We do not advise on visas; we do tell you the formalities at each end of the flight.
Safety
Carry identification throughout, as current advisories recommend, and travel between towns in daylight. We check travel advisories before confirming each route and tell you if they change.
When to go
We fly year-round. In the rainy season the pilot in command decides; if weather stops a flight, it is rescheduled at no cost. November to April is dry, with easier mountain roads and calmer water in the gulf.
The wet season brings heavy afternoon rain, slower roads to Perquín, and the biggest surf on the eastern points.
