Every list of El Salvador's best places contains the same handful. The order is not the useful part — knowing which suits you is, and in a country this small, the answer depends on what you want the trip to be rather than on how many days you have.
If it is your first trip
The La Libertad coast, because the airport is there and it is where most visitors are happiest: El Tunco for company, El Zonte for quiet.
And the Ruta de las Flores, two hours inland, for coffee towns, cool evenings and Juayúa's weekend food fair.
That pair is the standard short trip, and it works because nothing in it is a stretch.
If you want culture
Suchitoto, a colonial town above a lake, with galleries, restored houses and the slowest evenings in the country.
Joya de Cerén, the Maya village preserved under volcanic ash, and the most remarkable archaeological site in El Salvador.
And the historic centre of San Salvador, with its cathedral and restored plazas.
If you want one specific thing
Surf: the La Libertad coast, and it is not close. A volcano climb: Santa Ana, with its turquoise crater lake. A volcano without effort: El Boquerón, above the capital. Swimming in calm water: Lake Coatepeque. Birds and forest: El Imposible. Colonial charm: Suchitoto, then Concepción de Ataco. Doing nothing at all: the quieter end of the coast.
The one that costs more than it gives
Stated plainly, because a list without this section is not worth reading.
The east, on a short trip. Perquín, the Bay of Jiquilisco and the Gulf of Fonseca are genuinely rewarding, and they are three hours or more from the coast and the capital. On three or four days, they consume too much. On ten, they become the best part of the trip.
The region almost everyone skips
The east itself. Perquín and the mountain villages of Morazán carry the country's history in a way nothing else does; the Bay of Jiquilisco has mangroves and turtle beaches; and the Gulf of Fonseca has islands shared with Honduras and Nicaragua.
Almost no one-week visitor goes. For a second trip, or for anyone with ten days, it is the obvious gap.
How to actually choose
Choose by what you want the trip to be, which works here because the distances allow it.
Sea and ease: the coast plus the Ruta de las Flores. Culture: Suchitoto plus Joya de Cerén. Active: the Santa Ana volcano plus the surf. Depth: the east.
Where a second country fits
Because El Salvador is small, a week covers its best places and leaves room. Guatemala City, for Antigua, is 109,7 nautical miles from the international airport; San Pedro Sula, for Copán, 137,6; and Roatán 226,8. We show a "from" price per route; the final fare depends on the date, the group and the baggage, and is confirmed in writing before booking. The specific aircraft is assigned on confirmation, based on passenger count, baggage and the destination field.
Inside the country, every destination on this list is a road, and we would rather say so.
Safety and the season
Carry identification throughout, as current advisories recommend. We check travel advisories before confirming each route and tell you if they change.
We fly year-round. In the rainy season the pilot in command decides; if weather stops a flight, it is rescheduled at no cost. November to April suits every destination on this list, with clear volcano views and dry roads.
The wet season is greener, with afternoon storms and the biggest surf.
