El Salvador for Remote Work

A dollar economy on Central Time with a surf coast half an hour from the airport. What holds up, what the CA-4 means for a long stay, and the questions to settle first.

El Salvador has become a remote-work base for a practical set of reasons. It uses the US dollar, it runs on Central Time all year, and its surf coast is half an hour from the international airport. For anyone working North American hours, that combination is hard to beat in the region.

There are also questions to settle before committing to a month.

The three structural advantages

The currency. Rent, food and services are priced in dollars, which removes exchange-rate risk for anyone earning in them.

The time zone. El Salvador stays on Central Time with no seasonal change, which gives a steady overlap with North America every month.

And the airport. A coast base means a short trip to the terminal for work travel or visits home.

The questions to settle first

Your identification, every day. Current advisories recommend carrying identification at all times, with checkpoints common under the emergency measures in place. For a long stay, that becomes a daily habit rather than a travel precaution.

Your insurance and your employer. Check your policy, your own government's current advisory and any employer policy before booking a month. Some remote employers restrict which countries staff may work from, and that is a document question to settle early. We check travel advisories before confirming each route and tell you if they change. We do not advise on visas; we do tell you the formalities at each end of the flight.

We take no political position. We flag these because they are the difference between a good month and an expensive problem.

Where people settle

El Zonte, on the coast, is the quieter surf village where many remote workers base, with cafés and a smaller community.

El Tunco, next door, is livelier and louder, better for a week than a month for most.

San Salvador's western districts are the practical choice: the best connectivity, supermarkets, restaurants and a milder climate.

And the Ruta de las Flores, for a cool highland month with a slower pace and patchier infrastructure.

Where the connection holds up

San Salvador is the most reliable, with fibre widely available in the western districts.

The coast varies by property. Some coast rentals have solid fibre; others depend on less reliable connections.

Ask for a speed test rather than a description, ask specifically about upload, and ask what happens during a power cut. On the coast in particular, the rentals that work have a backup plan.

The heat, and the fix

The coast is hot in every month, and a March afternoon without air conditioning is not a working environment.

Check that the room you will actually work in has air conditioning, not only the bedroom.

Or split the month: weeks on the coast, weeks in the capital or the highlands.

The visa question

El Salvador is part of the CA-4, so a trip to Guatemala, Honduras or Nicaragua does not reset your clock.

Belize, Mexico and Costa Rica are outside it. Belize is 249,8 nautical miles from the international airport, Guatemala City 109,7 — but only one of those is outside the shared area.

Long-stay routes exist, with conditions set by immigration, and they change. Check the current position with Salvadoran immigration or an immigration lawyer, not with a travel article, including this one.

The pattern that works

One base with trips out, rather than constant movement.

Private flights leave from Ilopango, inside San Salvador and 16,0 nautical miles from the international airport, for regional weekends. We show a "from" price per route; the final fare depends on the date, the group and the baggage, and is confirmed in writing before booking. We fly year-round. In the rainy season the pilot in command decides; if weather stops a flight, it is rescheduled at no cost.

Frequently asked questions

Why El Salvador for remote work?

The US dollar, Central Time all year with no seasonal change, and a surf coast half an hour from the international airport.

What should I settle first?

Carrying identification daily, your insurance and your employer's policy on which countries you may work from.

Where do remote workers settle?

El Zonte on the coast for a quieter surf village, or San Salvador's western districts for the best connectivity.

Is the internet reliable?

Most reliable in San Salvador. On the coast it varies by property: ask for a speed test and a power-cut plan.

Does a trip to Guatemala reset my stay?

No. The CA-4 shares the clock. Belize, Mexico and Costa Rica are outside it.

What should I ask a landlord?

Whether the room you will actually work in has air conditioning, and what happens when the power goes.
