El Salvador has one structural advantage for families that no neighbour can match: nothing is far. The airport is half an hour from the coast, the highlands are two hours from anywhere, and a family week never includes the long road days that break trips elsewhere in the region.
Why the country works
The distances, above all. Children tire of transfers, and here there are almost none of any length.
Two climates in one small country. The hot coast and the cool highlands are two hours apart, which means relief from the heat is always close.
And the volcanoes are walks, not climbs, so the country's most dramatic sights are within reach of children who could not do Guatemala's.
By age, roughly
Under five: the coast and one highland stop. A calm swimming spot and a cool evening in the hills cover most of what small children need.
Five to ten: the sweet spot. The El Boquerón crater walk, a swim in Lake Coatepeque, Joya de Cerén and a coast base.
Eleven and up: the Santa Ana climb becomes realistic, and surf lessons on the calmer breaks work.
Teenagers: surf, the volcano climbs and the adventure activities around Apaneca on the Ruta de las Flores.
The hazard that matters
The sea. Much of the surf coast is rocky, with strong currents and limited lifeguard cover. These are surfing beaches, not swimming beaches, and they are the most likely way a family trip goes wrong here. Ask locally, choose sheltered spots, and watch small children constantly.
Where to swim instead: Lake Coatepeque, a calm crater lake below Santa Ana, is the country's best family swimming.
The heat, second
The coast and the lowlands are hot all year, and March and April are genuinely punishing. Plan mornings and late afternoons outdoors, and use the highlands for the hottest days.
What works particularly well
The El Boquerón crater, reached by road above San Salvador, with an easy walk and a view straight down into a volcano.
Lake Coatepeque, for swimming and boats in calm water.
Joya de Cerén, where children can see how ordinary people lived before a volcano buried their village — more vivid to many children than a pyramid.
And the Ruta de las Flores, with its cool weather, weekend food fair in Juayúa and zip-lines near Apaneca, subject to the operators' own age and weight limits.
The itinerary mistake
Basing only in El Tunco with young children. It is lively, the weekends are loud, and the beach is for surfers. A quieter coast town, or splitting the nights with the highlands, suits families better.
Two bases, not four, which the short distances make easy.
Where flying comes in
Nowhere inside the country, which is a relief with children. For a regional leg, private flights leave from Ilopango inside San Salvador, 16,0 nautical miles from the international airport; Guatemala City is 109,7. We show a "from" price per route; the final fare depends on the date, the group and the baggage, and is confirmed in writing before booking. The specific aircraft is assigned on confirmation, based on passenger count, baggage and the destination field.
Practicalities
Carry identification for the whole family, as current advisories recommend. We check travel advisories before confirming each route and tell you if they change.
Medical care is best in San Salvador, and thinner on the coast and in the east.
And sun and mosquito protection you actually trust, for the coast especially.
When to come
We fly year-round. In the rainy season the pilot in command decides; if weather stops a flight, it is rescheduled at no cost. November to February is the most comfortable window for children: dry, warm rather than hot, with cool highland evenings.
March and April are hot, and the wet season brings afternoon storms that a flexible plan absorbs.
