In El Salvador the question is not which route to take but where to sleep. Everything is close enough that a base works as a hub, and the two obvious candidates — the capital and the surf coast — are an hour apart and very different places to wake up.
The short answer
The coast, if your trip is about the sea, surf or rest. It is close to the airport and it is where most leisure visitors are happiest.
San Salvador, if your trip is about business, food or a central base for day trips. It reaches everything in two hours and has the country's best restaurants.
Both, split, if you have a week — and add a highland town for the middle nights.
What the capital does better
Centrality. The Ruta de las Flores, the volcanoes, Joya de Cerén and Suchitoto are all day trips from San Salvador.
Food and evenings. The western districts have the widest choice of restaurants in the country.
Business. If your meetings are in the city, staying on the coast means commuting through traffic.
And a milder climate, because the capital sits well above the coast.
What the coast does better
Proximity to the airport. The international airport is on the coast, so a coast base means the shortest possible arrival and departure.
Surf and the sea, obviously, with the towns of El Tunco and El Zonte half an hour or so from the terminal.
Pace. The coast is where visitors stop moving, and the evenings are warm and outdoors.
What neither does
Neither is the prettiest place to wake up. That is the Ruta de las Flores — Concepción de Ataco in particular — or Suchitoto above its lake.
Which is why the best trips use one of those for the middle nights, rather than doing every highland visit as a day trip from the coast or the capital.
Who should choose which
First trip, short stay, leisure: the coast. Surf: the coast, without question. Business: San Salvador. Food and a central hub for day trips: San Salvador. Families: the coast for the sea, or a quieter coast town rather than El Tunco on a weekend. Anyone with a week: split the nights and add a highland town.
The split that works
Two nights on the coast, two on the Ruta de las Flores, one or two in Suchitoto, finishing near the airport for the flight home.
That uses the country's small size properly: each base is a short drive from the next, and no day is spent only on the road.
Where flying comes in
Nowhere inside the country. Every base above is a short road from the others.
For a regional leg, private flights leave from Ilopango, inside San Salvador and 16,0 nautical miles from the international airport — one practical argument for ending a trip in the capital. Guatemala City is 109,7 nautical miles from the international airport. We show a "from" price per route; the final fare depends on the date, the group and the baggage, and is confirmed in writing before booking.
Practicalities
Book weekend nights ahead on the coast, where visitors from the capital fill the small hotels.
Use arranged transport for evening transfers, and carry identification, as current advisories recommend. We check travel advisories before confirming each route and tell you if they change.
When to go
We fly year-round. In the rainy season the pilot in command decides; if weather stops a flight, it is rescheduled at no cost. November to April suits both, with dry weather on the coast and clear views from the capital.
In the wet season, the coast's afternoons are stormy and the capital's evenings cooler.
