A Seven-Day Itinerary for El Salvador

In the smallest country in Central America, a week reaches the coast, the highlands, a volcano and a colonial town with room to spare. The route, the variation, and where a sector fits.

El Salvador is the only country in this region where a single week covers almost everything worth seeing. The coast, the highlands, a volcano and a colonial town all fit in seven days, with time left over — which is the opposite of the problem a week creates in Guatemala.

The route that works

Days one and two: the coast. The international airport is on the Pacific, so start there. Land, transfer to El Tunco or El Zonte in well under an hour, and give the coast two nights.

Days three and four: the Ruta de las Flores. Around two hours inland. Base in Concepción de Ataco or Juayúa, and time it so a weekend falls here for Juayúa's food fair.

Day five: the Santa Ana volcano. From the Ruta de las Flores, a morning climb to the crater lake of the country's highest volcano, with a view over Lake Coatepeque.

Day six: Suchitoto. A colonial town above a lake, across the country but still only a few hours away.

Day seven: back to the airport and fly, or to San Salvador for a last night.

That is a complete country in a week, with no day longer than a few hours on the road.

The variation for people who prefer quiet

Drop the coast nights to one and add a second at Suchitoto. The town rewards slowness, and the lake and the colonial streets are at their best in the early morning.

The variation with a second country

This is where El Salvador works as a hub. The country is small enough that a week inside it leaves room, and the neighbours are short sectors away.

Guatemala City is 109,7 nautical miles from the international airport, for Antigua.

San Pedro Sula is 137,6, which puts Copán's ruins within reach.

Roatán is 226,8, for a Caribbean finish. We show a "from" price per route; the final fare depends on the date, the group and the baggage, and is confirmed in writing before booking.

Five days in El Salvador and two in a second country is a better trip than seven days of only one, for most people. The specific aircraft is assigned on confirmation, based on passenger count, baggage and the destination field.

What does not need a flight

Nothing inside El Salvador. Every leg of the route above is a short road. We would rather say that than sell a sector the trip does not need.

Private flights, when a regional leg is added, leave from Ilopango inside San Salvador, 16,0 nautical miles from the international airport.

Arrival and departure

A morning landing puts you on the coast by lunch. An evening landing is still only a short transfer, which is one of this country's genuine advantages.

Build the last day around the international flight. The drive from Suchitoto or the Ruta de las Flores back to the airport is a couple of hours, and traffic around the capital can add to it.

Safety and practicalities

Carry identification, as current advisories recommend, and use arranged transport for evening transfers. We check travel advisories before confirming each route and tell you if they change.

Book weekend nights ahead on the coast and the Ruta de las Flores, where visitors from the capital fill the small hotels.

What the season does

We fly year-round. In the rainy season the pilot in command decides; if weather stops a flight, it is rescheduled at no cost. November to April, the route runs as written, with clear views from the volcano.

In the wet season, climb the volcano early — cloud builds by late morning — and allow more time on the mountain roads.

Frequently asked questions

Is a week enough for El Salvador?

Yes, with room to spare. The coast, the highlands, a volcano and a colonial town all fit in seven days.

Where should the trip start?

On the coast. The international airport is on the Pacific, well under an hour from El Tunco or El Zonte.

Which volcano fits the week?

Santa Ana, the country's highest, climbed in a morning from the Ruta de las Flores, with a crater lake at the top.

Do I need a flight inside El Salvador?

No. Every leg is a short road. A flight only makes sense for a regional leg.

Can I add a second country?

Yes. Guatemala City is 109,7 nautical miles away, San Pedro Sula for Copán 137,6, and Roatán 226,8.

How do I time the Ruta de las Flores?

So a weekend falls there, for Juayúa's food fair on Saturdays and Sundays.
