Belize City to the cayes: water taxi or flight, and what each costs you

Belize City to Ambergris Caye by water taxi or by air in 15 minutes. Which makes sense depends on how many cayes you plan to visit.

Belize City connects to the cayes by water taxi or by air, and for a single caye the boat is often fine. For a circuit, the arithmetic changes completely.

The distances

From Belize City (BZE):

Destination Distance Flight time
Caye Caulker (CYC) 36 km (22 mi) 10 minutes
San Pedro / Ambergris (SPR) 55 km (34 mi) 15 minutes
Dangriga (DGA) 62 km (39 mi) 15 minutes
Placencia (PLJ) 112 km (70 mi) 25 minutes
Punta Gorda (PND) 168 km (104 mi) 35 minutes

And Corozal, in the north, at 15 minutes against 2.5 hours by car.

Water taxi versus air

For one caye and back: the water taxi works. It is cheaper, and Caye Caulker and Ambergris are the standard runs.

For a circuit: the arithmetic inverts. No airstrip is more than 35 minutes from another, which means northern reef, rainforest and southern reef in four days with three short hops.

By boat, those same hops are a day each

— and several are not connected by water taxi at all.

What each caye gives you

Caye Caulker

— the smallest and least developed, at 10 minutes.

Ambergris

— the largest island with the most services, at 15 minutes. Gives access to Hol Chan, a 23 m (75 ft) channel through the barrier with $5 entry, and Shark Ray Alley, about 6.4 km (4 mi) south of San Pedro.

Dangriga — the mainland gateway at 15 minutes, opening Cockscomb Basin with roughly 200 jaguars across 128,000 acres.

Placencia

— the southern reef at 25 minutes, with Gladden Spit and the Silk Cayes, where four species of turtle live.

Punta Gorda — the far south at 35 minutes, with Mopan and Q'eqchi' Maya communities and the Toledo cacao growers.

Placencia's advantage

Worth knowing when you pick a base.

Placencia's lagoon stays navigable when the sea does not allow going out to the outer reef.

Which means a cancellation for sea state does not empty the day — the activity moves to sheltered water.

Ask any operator there whether they have a lagoon alternative. That is what distinguishes someone who knows the destination from someone selling only the fair-weather trip.

The four-day circuit

Day 1 — Ambergris: Hol Chan and Shark Ray Alley Day 2 — Fly to Dangriga, 15 minutes: Cockscomb Basin Day 3 — Fly to Placencia, 25 minutes: Gladden Spit Day 4 — Return to Belize City

Three hops under thirty minutes, covering reef, rainforest and southern reef.

The reef underneath

Belize's barrier reef is the largest reef system in the Northern Hemisphere, and the Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996.

Between the barrier and the coast lies a shallow lagoon, and the cayes sit across both — barrier cayes with direct outer reef access, and lagoon cayes, sheltered, with flats.

That distinction determines what you can do from where.

The Blue Hole, from any of them

318 m (1,043 ft) across, 124 m (407 ft) deep, on Lighthouse Reef atoll roughly 70 km (43 mi) from Belize City.

Its stalactites sit at 40 m (131 ft), with the formation zone starting around 33 m (108 ft) — deep certification required.

And the scenic flight wants high sun, not the low light that flatters most aerial photography. The colour contrast depends on light penetrating the water.

Before you book Belize City to Ambergris Caye

Long-sleeve rash guard for snorkeling — the back is exposed continuously.

Reef booties for shore entries.

Reef-safe sunscreen.

And do not dive on your departure day — snorkeling carries no restriction, which makes it the option for the day you fly.

If you want more than one caye, give us the sequence. Belize works as a circuit rather than a single destination, and that is where the flying pays.

Frequently asked questions

How do you get to Ambergris Caye?

By water taxi from Belize City, or by air in 15 minutes. For a single caye the boat works; for a circuit, flying inverts the arithmetic.

Is the water taxi worth it?

For one caye and back, yes — it is cheaper and Caye Caulker and Ambergris are the standard runs. For multiple cayes, the hops become a day each by boat.

How long is the flight to San Pedro?

Fifteen minutes from Belize City for 55 km. Caye Caulker is 10 minutes, Dangriga 15, Placencia 25 and Punta Gorda 35.

What is the best Belize caye circuit?

Four days: Ambergris for Hol Chan and Shark Ray Alley, Dangriga for Cockscomb Basin, Placencia for Gladden Spit, then back. Three hops under thirty minutes.

What happens if the sea is rough?

At Placencia, the lagoon stays navigable when the outer reef does not, so a cancellation for sea state does not empty the day.

Can you see the Blue Hole without diving?

Yes, and it is what most visitors buy. From the air it appears as a perfect dark circle against turquoise — book for high sun, since the contrast depends on light penetrating the water.
