Panama City to David: the gateway to Chiriquí and Boquete

David is Panama's western gateway — to Boquete's highlands, the Talamanca range and the short route into Bocas del Toro.

David is 344 km (214 mi) from Panama City — 1 hour 10 minutes by air, against roughly seven hours by road. It is the gateway to Chiriquí's highlands and the short route into Bocas.

Every route

Option Time Notes
Bus ~7 h Panama City to David, then onward
Commercial flight ~1 h From Albrook, not Tocumen
Private charter 1 h 10 m from Tocumen No cross-city transfer

And the same Albrook caveat applies here as with Bocas: commercial domestic flights leave from Albrook (PAC), requiring a 30 to 60 minute cross-city transfer from Tocumen and a three-hour buffer.

Why David matters as a staging point

It is the western gateway.

From David, the bus to Bocas del Toro runs about 4 hours 30 minutes including the water taxi — against about 10 hours 30 minutes from Albrook.

Which makes David viable if Chiriquí is already on your itinerary and Bocas is next.

And it opens the highlands, which are a different country from the coast.

Boquete and the highlands

Chiriquí's highlands sit at altitude, with cooler temperatures and the coffee that comes with them.

Why altitude matters for coffee: lower temperatures mean the cherry ripens more slowly, and that slow ripening concentrates sugars and develops acidity.

What to ask at a tasting: which farm, what altitude, which variety, which process — washed, natural or honey — and when it was roasted.

On process: washed gives cleaner cups with defined acidity, natural sweeter and fruitier, honey between. The same bean tastes different depending on which.

La Amistad, from the Panamanian side

The park covers 401,000 hectares (991,000 acres) across Costa Rica and Panama — the largest natural reserve in Central America — UNESCO-listed since 1983 and jointly directed through a Binational Technical Unit.

On the Panamanian side it spans Chiriquí and Bocas del Toro provinces, containing close to nine of the twelve classified life zones.

600 bird species, including the resplendent quetzal, whose presence depends on the fruiting of the wild avocados it feeds on; the three-wattled bellbird, located by its call before it is seen; and the bare-necked umbrellabird.

Which means the local guide is decisive — in cloud forest much of the identification is by ear.

And it is inhabited territory: the Naso, Bribri and Ngöbe-Buglé peoples live within the park, which means authorization from community authorities in addition to the protected area's.

Changuinola, and the Bocas connection

Changuinola (CHX) serves the La Amistad area, and connects to Bocas del Toro by a short route.

Which allows combining high cloud forest with Caribbean reef in the same trip.

The network

From Tocumen (PTY):

Destination Distance Flight time
Río Hato (RIH) 113 km (70 mi) 25 minutes
Chitré (CTD) 165 km (103 mi) 35 minutes
Bocas del Toro (BOC) 316 km (196 mi) 1 hour 5 minutes
David (DAV) 344 km (214 mi) 1 hour 10 minutes

Which puts the whole country under seventy minutes from the capital.

A day across the west

07:00 — Depart Tocumen 08:10 — Land at David 09:30 — Highlands and coffee farms 14:00 — Lunch 16:00 — Return, or onward to Bocas

Before you book Panama City to David

Confirm your departure airport — Tocumen or Albrook makes the difference.

Layers and a rain shell for the highlands, where cloud forest humidity is constant whether or not it rains.

Binoculars, with 600 species in La Amistad.

A local guide, both for auditory identification and for territory access.

And verify authorizations if the park is on the plan — both the area's and the community's.

Panama's five UNESCO sites

Worth carrying, since they get confused.

Panamá Viejo and the Historic District of Panamá.

The Portobelo–San Lorenzo fortifications.

Darién National Park, inscribed 1981, at 575,000 hectares (1.4 million acres).

The Talamanca Range–La Amistad Reserve, inscribed 1983.

And Coiba National Park, one of the few marine World Heritage sites on the planet.

The Panama Canal is not on the list.

Frequently asked questions

How do you get to Boquete?

Via David, Chiriquí's gateway — 1 hour 10 minutes by air from Panama City, against roughly seven hours by road. The highlands are reached from there.

How long is the drive to David?

About seven hours from Panama City. Commercial flights take around an hour but leave from Albrook, requiring a cross-city transfer from Tocumen.

Is David worth visiting?

As a gateway rather than a destination. It opens Chiriquí's highlands, the La Amistad park, and the short route into Bocas — about 4 hours 30 minutes by bus, against 10 hours 30 from Albrook.

What is La Amistad?

A 401,000-hectare binational park shared by Costa Rica and Panama, UNESCO-listed since 1983 and jointly directed. It holds 600 bird species and is home to the Naso, Bribri and Ngöbe-Buglé peoples.

Can you see quetzals there?

The resplendent quetzal is among the 600 species, but its presence depends on the fruiting of the wild avocados it feeds on. Ask local guides what is happening on your dates.

Why is highland coffee different?

Lower temperatures at altitude mean slower ripening, which concentrates sugars and develops acidity. Ask which farm, what altitude, which variety and which process.
