Packaging flights to raise the average booking

What an operator can honestly bundle, why the margin is thinner than it looks, and the version that raises the ticket without adding risk.

Raising the rate is one way to earn more per booking and the hardest one. Adding what the passenger was going to buy anyway is the other, and it is available to an operator without touching the rate at all.

It is also the place where operators quietly take on liability for services they do not control.

What a passenger buys around the flight

Ground transfer at both ends. Almost universal, almost always arranged separately, and the single most common source of a bad day that gets blamed on the flight.

Overnight accommodation when the schedule forces it.

And the activity itself — the lodge, the dive operation, the tour.

A Tortuguero transfer of 53.4 nautical miles is one line in an itinerary the passenger is assembling from four suppliers. Every one of those lines is a chance for something to slip, and the flight gets blamed for the day regardless of which one did.

Why the margin is thinner than it looks

You are reselling someone else's service at their price plus a share. The share is real and modest, and it arrives with coordination work that is not modest.

And the failure is yours. A late transfer van is your problem now, because the passenger bought the transfer from you. We run scheduled private flights across Central America; any other destination worldwide is coordinated on request.

That trade can be worth making. It is not worth making by accident, which is how most operators first make it — by arranging a car as a favour and discovering they own the outcome.

The version that works

Bundle only what you can stand behind. In practice that is the ground link at your own base, with a provider you use every week and can call at six in the morning.

Be explicit about who supplies what. A confirmation that says the flight is yours and the transfer is arranged with a named provider gives the passenger a complete day and gives you a defensible position when the van is late. We quote waiting time and aircraft overnights at the destination: tell us whether you return the same day or the aircraft waits, and we include it in the price.

And price it as a pass-through with a stated coordination charge, not as a marked-up secret. We show a "from" price per route; the final fare depends on the date, the group and the baggage, and is confirmed in writing before booking. Partners find out what the van costs, and a hidden margin discovered is worth less than a stated one accepted.

The version that does not

Multi-supplier itineraries. A Liberia–Tamarindo of 23.2 nautical miles wrapped into flight, hotel, two tours and a return is a tour operator's product, with a tour operator's obligations and, in most places, a tour operator's registration. We run scheduled private flights across Central America; any other destination worldwide is coordinated on request.

And anything where you carry the money for services months ahead. That is deposits against other people's delivery, and it is a cash-flow structure rather than a package.

What it is actually worth

Less in margin than in retention. A Drake Bay run of 83.5 nautical miles that arrives as part of a day that worked produces a passenger who books the same operator next year, and repeat bookings are worth more than the coordination fee on the transfer ever was.

Treat the package as a way to control the day rather than a revenue line, and the decision about how much to bundle gets easier: only as much as you can control. Operators we bring on evidence current certification, insurance and fleet documentation before receiving a first assignment.

Questions we get asked

What does a passenger buy around the flight?

Ground transfer at both ends, accommodation when the schedule forces it, and the activity itself.

Why is the margin thinner than it looks?

You resell someone else's service for a modest share, and the failure becomes yours because they bought it from you.

What is safe to bundle?

The ground link at your own base, with a provider you use weekly and can call at six in the morning.

How should it be priced?

As a pass-through with a stated coordination charge. A hidden margin discovered is worth less than a stated one accepted.

What should not be bundled?

Multi-supplier itineraries, which are a tour operator's product, and anything holding money for other people's delivery.

What is a package really worth?

Less in margin than in retention. A day that worked produces a passenger who books you again.
