Osa does not have one entrance: it has three, and which one is yours depends on which side of the peninsula you sleep on, not on which is closest on the map.
The three entrances
| Airstrip | From San José | Serves |
|---|---|---|
| Drake Bay | 83.5 NM | Northern lodges, Drake sector |
| Palmar Sur | 76.3 NM | The same, via road and boat |
| Puerto Jiménez | 102.6 NM | The whole Golfo Dulce side |
Drake and Puerto Jiménez are on opposite sides of the peninsula. Landing at the wrong one is not a detour: it is half a day gone, and there is no fast road linking them.
If your lodge is in the Drake sector
Two ways, and your group size chooses, not you.
Direct flight to Drake, if you fit. Eighty-three nautical miles and the lodge collects you at the strip. It is the clean option.
The runway measures 1,000 × 18 m, among the generous ones in the network: it takes the catalogue categories without the tightness other fields on the peninsula impose. The specific aircraft is assigned on confirmation, based on passenger count, baggage and the destination field.
Then the way in is Palmar Sur, 76.3 nautical miles —1,400 × 12 m, narrower than Drake— followed by road to Sierpe and boat down the Térraba. One more leg, and with tide-driven schedules of its own. The boat leg on the Térraba depends on tides and is arranged by your accommodation or a local operator.
Many Drake lodges include that boat in their package. Ask them before arranging it separately: it is among the mistakes most often paid for twice, and the money is not recoverable once both are booked.
If your lodge is on the Golfo Dulce
Puerto Jiménez, 102.6 nautical miles from San José. From there, road to your accommodation. Ground transfer is not included in the fare: your accommodation or a local operator arranges it.
It is the Matapalo side and the southern lodges of the peninsula. It is also the entrance to the southern sector of Corcovado, which in practice works as a different park from the one entered via Drake: different access points, different posts, different logistics.
With a large group, Golfito is 10.0 nautical miles from Puerto Jiménez and the gulf is crossed by regular boat. Sometimes that works out better.
And before all of this: the park
If your trip includes Corcovado, the entry quota and the certified guide are booked before the flight, not after. They are handled by the park authority or your local operator. Access requires an authorisation handled by the area’s administration or your local operator, on their own timescales.
Whoever books the flight first risks having the aircraft and not the entry. It is the ordering that forces most quotes to be redone across the whole peninsula.
What to ask your lodge
The name of the airstrip, not the region. "Osa" is not a usable answer: it covers three airstrips on opposite sides of a peninsula with no fast road between them.
Whether they collect at the strip or you need your own arrangements.
And the last collection time of the day, which is what fixes your flight time.
Frequently asked questions
How many air entrances does Osa have?
Three: Drake Bay at 83.5 nautical miles from San José, Palmar Sur at 76.3 and Puerto Jiménez at 102.6.
Which one is mine?
It depends which side of the peninsula you sleep on. Drake and Puerto Jiménez are on opposite sides.
Why can I not always fly direct to Drake?
Not the runway: it measures 1,000 × 18 m. The narrow ones are elsewhere. The specific aircraft is assigned on confirmation, based on passenger count, baggage and the destination field.
What happens if I come in via Palmar Sur?
Road to Sierpe and boat down the river, on tide schedules. Many lodges include it. The boat leg on the Térraba depends on tides and is arranged by your accommodation or a local operator.
And for the Golfo Dulce?
Puerto Jiménez, then road. With a large group, Golfito at 10.0 nautical miles may work out better.
What do I book first for Corcovado?
The park quota. It comes before the flight, not after. Access requires an authorisation handled by the area’s administration or your local operator, on their own timescales.
