Diving at Caño Island, Costa Rica allows a maximum of ten people in the dive zone at a time, and reservations are required. Resolve that before you buy flights — not after, which is the order most travelers get wrong.
The cap, and what it means
Maximum ten people simultaneously in the dive zone.
Advance reservation mandatory, and the recommendation is explicit: book before purchasing flights or lodging.
With a cap that small, arriving late is not a delay — it is a lost slot that does not come back.
And the reserve's rules:
No feeding, touching or harassing wildlife.
No feeding the fish.
All fishing prohibited.
The conditions nobody warns about
Currents and visibility at Caño Island are not easy to predict.
The same site can offer very different conditions on consecutive days.
Which means: accept that your operator may change sites or cancel based on what they find. And be a confident swimmer — in variable current that is a requirement, not a recommendation.
Reef-safe sunscreen, since conventional formulas damage the system.
Drake Bay's two whale seasons
This is unusual and worth planning around.
Humpbacks migrate from cold water toward warm water to breed and calve.
Costa Rica's southern Pacific receives populations from both hemispheres, each arriving in its own winter.
The result: two separate windows across the year, with a quieter stretch between.
Which one suits your dates is the question to ask your operator before fixing them.
And sightings are not guaranteed. The tour is paid whether or not there is an encounter.
On breaching: it happens, but it is not the usual behavior. Most encounters are surface and travel.
Corcovado from the north
Drake gives access to Corcovado via San Pedrillo.
The park's conditions apply: daily cap of 200 people, guide mandatory, hours 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., advance reservation required.
One seasonal closure: the San Pedrillo–Sirena trail closes from 1 May to 1 December.

A day with two activities
06:30 — Depart San José 07:05 — Land at Drake 08:00 — Whale watching departure 12:00 — Return to the bay 14:00 — Caño Island or coastal trails 18:00 — Departure
Two activities without overnighting — which the road route makes impossible.
Conduct with cetaceans
Distance, as specified by your operator under regulation.
Never cut across a traveling group's path.
Reduced throttle on approach, neutral in observation.
No chasing, no circling, no separating individuals.
And no entering the water with them.
An operator who closes the distance for the photograph is breaking the rules.
Before you book
Reserve Caño Island before buying flights. Ten-diver cap.
Confirm which whale season matches your dates.
Motion sickness medication before departure.

And accept that sightings are not guaranteed.
Sequencing the two activities
Whale watching departs early, which fixes the morning.
Caño Island needs its own slot, with a ten-diver cap.
