El Salvador is not a classic honeymoon destination, and it is better to say so plainly. It has no luxury resort coast and no private islands. What it has is small boutique hotels in highland towns, a crater lake, a quiet stretch of coast and very good value — which makes it an excellent half of a honeymoon, rather than the whole of one.
Where it works
Suchitoto, a colonial town above a lake, with small hotels in restored houses and evenings that are quiet in the best way. It is the most romantic place in the country.
The Ruta de las Flores, especially Concepción de Ataco, with cool evenings, coffee farms and boutique stays in the hills.
Lake Coatepeque, a blue crater lake below the Santa Ana volcano, where lakeside hotels offer swims and sunsets.
And the quieter end of the coast, around El Zonte, for a few days by the sea without El Tunco's weekend crowds.
The shape that works
Two nights in Suchitoto, two on the Ruta de las Flores or at Lake Coatepeque, then the coast. Short drives, three very different settings.
Or four days in El Salvador and the rest of the week somewhere else, which is where this country shines.
Why it pairs so well with a second destination
El Salvador is small enough that four or five days cover its best places, and it sits among neighbours that offer what it lacks.
Roatán is 226,8 nautical miles from the international airport, for Caribbean reef and white sand at the end.
Guatemala City is 109,7, for Antigua's colonial hotels at the start.
That combination — highlands and culture here, a Caribbean island after — is the honeymoon we would build. Private flights leave from Ilopango, 16,0 nautical miles from the international airport. We show a "from" price per route; the final fare depends on the date, the group and the baggage, and is confirmed in writing before booking. The specific aircraft is assigned on confirmation, based on passenger count, baggage and the destination field.
What feels like a honeymoon here
Small, personal hotels rather than resorts, often with a handful of rooms and owners who know every guest.
Cool highland evenings after warm days, which couples mention more than they expect to.
And the value. The dollar economy and modest prices mean the same budget goes noticeably further than in Costa Rica, leaving room for the second destination.
The mistakes
Basing a honeymoon in El Tunco on a weekend. It is lively and loud, and the beach is for surfers.
Expecting resort luxury on the coast. The best hotels here are small and characterful, not grand.
And a tight last day. Build the departure around the international flight, allowing for traffic around the capital.
Practicalities
Check your insurance and your own government's advisory before paying deposits, as for any trip, and carry identification throughout the stay, as current advisories recommend. We check travel advisories before confirming each route and tell you if they change.
Book small hotels well ahead, because many have only a few rooms.
When to go
We fly year-round. In the rainy season the pilot in command decides; if weather stops a flight, it is rescheduled at no cost. November to February is the best window: dry, warm by day and cool in the highlands at night.
March and April are hot, and the wet season brings afternoon storms that a slow honeymoon absorbs easily.
