Puerto Jiménez is the origin furthest from the Central Valley in the whole Costa Rican catalogue — one hundred and two point six nautical miles to San José — and at the same time it has a neighbour at ten.
The destinations, by distance
| Destination | Distance |
|---|---|
| Golfito | 10.0 NM |
| Drake Bay | 23.0 NM |
| Palmar Sur | 26.8 NM |
| David (Panama) | 52.2 NM |
| Quepos | 73.3 NM |
| Tobías Bolaños (Pavas) | 98.7 NM |
| San José | 102.6 NM |
Three destinations under twenty-seven nautical miles, then a jump. It is the typical geometry of a peninsula's far end.
And it explains why almost every Osa itinerary is built short: once here, moving within the peninsula costs minutes; leaving it costs an hour.
Golfito, ten nautical miles away
The two look across at each other from opposite shores of the Golfo Dulce, and yet by road it is hours: the whole head of the gulf has to be driven around.
There is a regular boat, which for many travellers is the natural connection. By air it is ten nautical miles, the shortest leg between two fields in the Costa Rican catalogue.
And there is a difference that matters: Golfito does not restrict the aircraft and Puerto Jiménez does. Eight hundred and twenty-two metres by eighteen is not Drake Bay, but it limits. The specific aircraft is assigned on confirmation, based on passenger count, baggage and the destination field.
With a large group, the way into Osa is usually Golfito, not here.

Panama, closer than the capital
David is 52.2 nautical miles away and San José 102.6. Twice as far.
For anyone combining Osa with Chiriquí or Boquete, the southern exit is the short one. It crosses a border, with deadlines of its own that do not depend on distance, but those are known in advance — unlike the queue at Paso Canoas.
It is worth staging through Golfito, which is international and does not restrict: ten extra nautical miles in exchange for not splitting the group or handling a border from a small field.
What it opens on its own side
Puerto Jiménez serves the southern sector of Corcovado, Cabo Matapalo and the Golfo Dulce. It is the park's main overland access from the south.
If your destination is Drake Bay rather than Puerto Jiménez, Palmar Sur is 17.3 nautical miles from Drake and does not restrict — worth comparing before committing.
And Corcovado quotas are booked before the flight. We do not handle them. Access requires an authorisation handled by the area’s administration or your local operator, on their own timescales.
And the transfer to the lodges
In Osa it can be long and by track, especially towards the peninsula's interior. Ground transfer is not included in the fare: your accommodation or a local operator arranges it.
Ask about it before fixing the flight's hour, not after.
